I went out to chester woods over the long weekend and got into some nice gills and crappies. Using gill pills and diamond jigs tipped with waxies and minnows.

I have just one question though when i took my fish home and cleaned them I noticed little black speckles in the meat of the gills??? Anyone know what these are and are they anything to worry about. I still cleaned them i just kept them seperate. Thanx!!!

I’m pretty sure they’re a fluke(a type of parasite), and are an intermediate stage of a blue heron parasite. And they cycle, just like any other organism.

Nothing to be worried about. Hasn’t everyone seen these before? Cook your fish well and you should never have to worry about any parasite you find.

The black spots are bad enough, but those yellow, fluke-like worms that crawl out of the meat do me in. The crappies seem to be the least affected by these parasitic infestations, but they too will have these critters in the meat. Enjoy….you can have mine.
