small stream/river smallmouth

The smaller streams and rivers like the Root and Zumbro are really producing some nice smallmouth right now. Since the water levels are low, the fish are fairly easy to locate in deeper pools which have some current. It is very important to C&R these fish. They are slow growing and it is difficult to replace this resource. Don’t be surprised if you get a walleye or sauger from these same areas! Smaller crankbaits or jigs with 3-4 inch plastics seem to be working well.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Hey Mike, what kind of plastics do you recomend? Color and size? Have you tried the Kalin Tails or Ringworms? And do you stock the ”hot baits”? Thanks, Bill

    Hey Bill,

    Welcome back!
From the reports I’m hearing, it seems plastics in the 3 inch range are working well right now as well as some top water lures. As we get further into fall, the bigger plastics like ringworms and Kalins will be the ticket.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

It feels great to be back. Can’t wait til the weekend to get back on the Mississippi River for the Walleye Searchers Tournament. Thanks, Bill
