I posted this elsewhere, but I feel it needs to be posted in more than one board or forum.

“Just a reminder for those who already know, and a heads up for those who don’t, that this lake can be dangerous. In many areas we see thin or changing ice conditions on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis. Freezing and re-freezing is yet another common malady for the lake, one area in particular is Rattlesnake where the current runs headlong into the shoreline and drags warmer water up and degrades the ice. On nice days the shore can open up, especially during early ice period. Even during periods of twenty inches of ice or more warm snaps can send water up on the ice. Last year when we awere finally able to access this spot by foot I found a line with an inch and a half of ice just past where I was drilling holes in 6 inches and the snow covered the line. That could have been a 26 foot dunking or worse.

The worst area on the lake is that stretch from Sandy Point launch to the shore a little to the right of the shore across from Fishermans Inn launch site. This location never sets good ice and is a trap for those who venture out on it.

I know this post will not sit well with at least one person, but it is one that has to be placed. Of all the waters I have fished thru the ice over the years, this one scares me the most.”

Good advice Tom. Always use caution when going out on any ice! Lake Zumbro has a river running through it and can have variable ice conditions at almost any time.

Lake Zumbro makes me nervous too. That flowing water can change ice conditions quick! I’ll wait til there are a GOOD few HARD freezes and a well beaten path (yeah yeah, I know that doesn’t mean safe ice….there is no safe ice ) before I head out there. First ice is almost upon us. Get your spud bar, extra long rope, ice picks, and life vest ready!

Thanks Tom. There are alot of other bodies of water in the Rochester area that are alot shallower and safer. Those safer bodies of water are the ones to do most of your ice fishing at fish in my mind.
    Thanks, Bill
