Tom and I were talking about this today. I am sure Tom can express ideas about this better than me, but 2 points come to mind when I think about this:
What is going to stop the lake from needing to be dredged every 10 years. Shouldn’t the first thing to do is to address where the sediment is coming from and to stop it from happening?
Should the funding for this project come from the general tax coffers? If the street in front of my house needs a major overhaul, I get accessed additional taxes because I happen to live there. Maybe this assessment idea should apply to lakeshore owners?

And one other thought is that perhaps the sediment has long covered some old pollution in the lake bottom and how will that affect the health of the lake and the fish when it gets exposed again?

These people live on a river containment used for power. It’s not a lake.
If it wasn’t for the need of RPU and it’s coal spewing power plant to have some “green” energy production this hydro site would have been abandoned and the damn would probably be defunct by now. The sedimentation is not causing RPU any grief. If property owners want improved shorline for their big boats and upriver developers want deeper water to build more condos why is it a tax payers problem? Contamination and disposal of dredgings is always a problem regardless of who pays for the removal. Yes this “lake” is one of the few little jewels here in Olmsted (land of no lakes) County, but the price to dig it up is very high and how does it benefit the majority of the population?
Ok off my soap box and back to work.

Lake Association members are hoping to get $350,000 for the planning of the project, but King says the cost of the actual dredging will be around 10 million dollars.

    Wow.

don’t you just love when politics and hobbies collide!!! I don’t know really what to make of this. 10 million on our lake zumbro YIKES i am guessing 10 million in other areas in se mn would get us alot more than just deeper water that our great grandchildren willhave to dredge out again. ike
