Despite the recent flooding, the fish are doing just fine.
Mike and I found this out yesterday.
The water is still high and dirty, like coffee and the no wake zone. However the fish didn\\\’t mind one bit.
We crawled out very slow so as not to raise any wake. Took us three times as long to get to our spots, but worth the time.
First thing we discovered was a difinite color preference. They wanted nothing but bright/lite colored jigs and it had better be tipped with some meat.
They were in mid range water depth up to somewhat shallow.
The real key here was structure, they had to have something, anything to relate to. They hung real tight to this as well. Five feet away, nothing. Get inside the perimeter and bingo.
Mike would flip out, let it settle and repeat the process with consistent success a fair share of the time.
I used a bobber and fished break lines close to shore about four feet deep and could score just as well.
The crappies are back and the bluegills did not disappoint us. Crappies went 11-12 and the gills a good 8-9.
We started off rathing nicely, then it got slow, but by the time the sun had settled and we discovered those tight structure related areas, it was fun, fun, fun.
The water temp has taken a dive. Surface temps yesterday were in the high 60\\\’s. When holding a fish, their body temps were noticably cooler to the touch.
With fall just around the corner, the best is yet to come.
One sure sign that fall isn\\\’t that far off, the Sumac in the ditches is starting to turn red. Gotta love it.
