With another beautiful day on tap, my buddy Jim and I decided to hit Lake Zumbro Thursday morning. Our target fish were bluegills and crappies, but we found lots of “other” fish willing to bite as well. Those other fish included carp, catfish, sucker, sheephead, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass.

Our rods and reels were ultra-lights. That UL gear makes catching any fish lots of fun! The lure of choice was a mini-mite jig tipped with a waxie. The fish are established in their summer patterns, usually suspended 8-15 ft. over water as deep as 30 ft. You can use your electronics to spot them.

The recent large amount of rain water coming into the system has produced a huge algea bloom on the lake. There are schools of minnows feeding near the surface on the algea and when you see the minnows, there are usually larger fish under them.

Remember to release most of the gills and crappies so that we can continue to have great fishing well into the future. We released all our fish including gills up to 9 1/2 inches and crappies up to 11 1/2 inches. It was another great day to be on the water. Hope you have a chance to get out fishing soon!

Looks like fun guys. Great weather and a good bite makes for a fantastic day on the water.
    Thanks, Bill
