What a great day to do a little slab chasing on the river! This was first trip to the Mighty Mississippi this year and my buddies Ron and Bill came along to share the fun. We were fishing a relatively shallow area with some deeper water to 12 ft. The key was finding deeper water close to submerged wood.
We used mini-mite jigs in a variety of colors. There was no need to tip the jigs with a waxie today. The fish usually hit those small jigs very hard when they decided it was time to eat. Once in a while there would just be extra weight and then it was time to set the hook! A vertical presentation worked best. Most of the fish came about 5 feet down over 8-10 feet of water.
We also managed to run aground a couple times onto sand bars which were somewhat unpleasant surprises. It was the first time I ever had to get out of my boat to get it unstuck. That’s a river for ya! It chages from year to year and you can never be too careful.
Another great day is in the books! Lots of fish, great company, great weather, and a little advernture were a good mix for a memorable day. Can’t wait to do it again soon, but will try to miss the sandbars… Hope you have a chance to get out fishing soon!
