Had the chance to get out on Lake Zumbro with my buddy Dale Depeel this morning. The weather last night brought thunder, so I didn’t know if the fish would be tough to catch. We decided to use our standard lure – the mini-mite jig and found the fish were willing to bite.
Dale was using his new custom St. Croix rod made by Mike Fischer. I used my favorite 9 ft. custom UL rod. The fish were into their typical summer pattern, suspended over deep water. Most of our bites came at about 8-12 ft. regardless of how deep the water was.
The fish were biting light and at times were difficult to hook as they seemed to be only grabbing the tail of the mini-mite. Tipping the jig with a waxie seemed to make them hang on a little longer and thus increased our hooking percentage.
We got lots of nice bluegills, some largemouth and smallmouth bass, and some perch. Surprisingly, we did not catch any crappies or white bass today. I had on a very large northern for a short time until he showed no respect for my 4 lb. test line. It was a fun day to be out and enjoy some great fishing. Hope you get to enjoy some fishing soon!
