Had the chance to get out on Lake Zumbro with my buddy Dale Depeel this morning. The weather last night brought thunder, so I didn’t know if the fish would be tough to catch. We decided to use our standard lure – the mini-mite jig and found the fish were willing to bite.

Dale was using his new custom St. Croix rod made by Mike Fischer. I used my favorite 9 ft. custom UL rod. The fish were into their typical summer pattern, suspended over deep water. Most of our bites came at about 8-12 ft. regardless of how deep the water was.

The fish were biting light and at times were difficult to hook as they seemed to be only grabbing the tail of the mini-mite. Tipping the jig with a waxie seemed to make them hang on a little longer and thus increased our hooking percentage.

We got lots of nice bluegills, some largemouth and smallmouth bass, and some perch. Surprisingly, we did not catch any crappies or white bass today. I had on a very large northern for a short time until he showed no respect for my 4 lb. test line. It was a fun day to be out and enjoy some great fishing. Hope you get to enjoy some fishing soon!

Last Sunday when Nate, Jessie, Makenzie and I were on the water fishing we noticed something strange. We were catching crappies and then moved down the shoreline just a bit and the crappies action stopped and we caught bluegills. It was like each spieces had their own special areas right next to each other and the others spieces weren’t invited to step into their territory. Weird, but true. There are so many areas that hold fish out there and the fish aren’t always where we think they ”must” be at either according to mans seasonal calendar. The more time I spend on Lake Zumbro the more I learn and also unlearn some things as to where the fish are compared to where man says they must be. I try to learn something new on each Thursday night [and every day that I may be out there] as Zumbro is both a lake and has river flowing through it so things can change quickly. Just wish I could of been able to fish tonight but no such luck. But hopefully next Thursday I’ll be out there so I can learn some more because nobody knows it all and we can always learn more and going fishing with an attitude of wanting to learn more about a body of water will help you to notice more things and hopefully learn more too. Hopefully soon I will be back on the water and able to hear those words we all love to hear-FISH ON!!! Until then guys I hope you all will keep posting about how you are doing on your outtings.

    Thanks, Bill

Here is a picture of a couple northerns caught off the public pier by Fisherman’s Inn this morning. They were caught on minnows.
