One might be amazed at what the Rochester area holds as far as “natural” fishing opportunities.
The old Bear Creek beyond the Chesterwoods Dam for years held trout that often grew old and huge.
Beginning west of Rock Dell, one of the forks of the South Branch of the Zumbro River flows north and eastward towards Rochester offering miles of relatively un-tapped fishing.
Further to the north, another fork of this branch of the Zumbro River gains water as it flows towards the confluence with the Rock Dell fork. This particular run begins well west and south of Kasson as nothing more than a trickle under old cement bridges in farmland. Some awfully nice sunfish can be found in the pools located near those bridges.
Just south of Rock Dell and the continental divide which separates the Zumbro and Root River watersheds, one will find the Root River flowing east towards Stewartville. Again, this run of water holds some uncanny fishing opportunities for those who muster the ambition to follow it.
Far too many people are of the mis-conceived notion that a run of water has to be big enough to canoe before it will hold quality fish. The fish are there, its just that the people haven’t been there and that makes these areas special.
