Lake Zumbro Update

The bite on Lake Zumbro is really heating up. The surface water temp was as high as 64 degrees in some areas with 61 degrees being the lowest I saw on Thursday night. The gills and male crappies are up on the shorelines and can easily be caught by casting Mini-Mites set around a foot to a foot and a half under a float [bobber]. The big gals are out deeper for the most part and are harder to get them to bite. They just aren’t up that shallow yet for the most part. Once in awhile you may catch a big one but for my boat there were only a few big ones being caught. Finding the nice gills seems to be no problem for me but the big crappies are still hiding from this guy for the most part. But I plan to change that in the near future as am hoping to spend more time locating bigger crappies this year. We all need goals or wish lists [lol] and that sounds like a good plan for me. How about you? Planning to get out more and chase crappies even when they aren’t hopping in the boat? Sounds like a good plan to me. Hope to see you on the water.

    Thanks, Bill

Lake Zumbro’s water clarity has really improved the past few years and the end result of that is a very good fishery. The crappies, bluegills, largemouth, smallmouth and northerns have all grown in size very nicely as a result. You will find anglers such as walleye Pro Rick Cordie [who is co-founder of Walleye Searchers of Minnesota and lives on the lake] fishing out there. Along with Rick you will find Mike Smith who owns Hooked On Fishing Bait & Tackle store in Rochester who has fished the lake for many years, also Crappie Tom calls this body of water his home waters, and you will find guys who have fished the lake all their lives, guys who have been fishing there for several years and also guys who are fairly new to Lake Zumbro. The lake offers something for everyone. It even has bass tournaments every Tuesday during the bass season, fishing events every Thursday night, and people chasing after northerns and muskys too. But most of all it is home to alot of people who love to fish and have found this body of water thats so close to home to be a fun place to be. The next time you wish to wet a line give Lake Zumbro a shot. You will be glad you did.
    Thanks, Bill

Every once in a while out there, you’ll get those wonderful nights, when there isn’t too much wind, that besides the great fishing, you can hear the sound of a woodpecker in the background. You can see deer in the shoreline woods, while an eagle is flying above you! You watch your bobber slowly sink and set the hook on one of the biggest crappies you’ve seen in a while! The whole overall experience is one not to be missed!
