Ron (RHW) and I had the chance to get out to our favorite lake today – Lake Zumbro. We had not been on the water together for a long time and both of us were looking forward to catching some of those great crappies and bullgills the lake is famous for. We would not be disappointed!

The crappies were relating to wood today. Most of the active fishm were 6-9 ft. down over much deeper water. Without wood present, there were very few fish. These fish are staging waiting for a higher water temp before heading into the shallows to spawn.

Our lures of choice today were mini-mites. We fished them straight over the side of the boat. There was no need to add any meat today. Most of the hits were aggressive, but some came from underneath and then you noticed slack in your line. Best colors were purple, pink, or orange. We used our 9 ft. UL St. Croix spinning rods teamed with an Okuma Metaloid reel.

The water has cleared quite a bit in the past week and is actually fairly clear now. The wind was blowing a little hard for good boat control in some areas, but it was still a great day to be on the water. The company was great as usual! Hope you get out to enjoy some of the great fishing soon.

Yes, you can hold 6 crappies at once!

Looks like a couple boys had fun playing hooky from work. Nice fish guys.
    Thanks, Bill

I hope they are cooperating like that this weekend. Though I’m guessing it will be a bit more crowded out there as well.
