Here is a picture of Andy Anderson with a possible new record Northern Hognose Sucker caught in the Zumbro River. It was very close in weight on my scale and measured out longer than the current record. Andy was off to contact the DNR.

The sucker run is a big thing at the Zumbro River. They pretty much fish nightcrawlers on the bottom in certain honey holes. Some of the other species of suckers get much larger, up to 10 lbs. I expect at least one record to be broken from there this spring.

So what was the weight and what is the record? Nice fish. There is a good sucker bite on the upper Miss. in the late fall around aitkin. Lots of fun when nothing else is going on.

Is there a certain they target for smoking or is anything fair game. We used to smoke some out of a lake many years ago. Have no idea what type they where. May have to take the kids out looking for them this weekend.

The record is 1 lb. 14 oz. The length on the record was 14.25. Andy’s was 2 oz. short on weight, but measured 15 inches. I am not sure if they usually keep any?

Man, that is one ugly fish. I am sure though it was fun to catch. I had the same deal last summer on Mille Lacs with my 23.5″ smallie that weighed in just short of the record for the state. We were on the phone from the boat to the bait stores to find out what the record weight was. We ended up short (not by much) but ended up taking some pics and measurments for the replica. Congrats on the big fish, I know how you might have felt.

Andy Anderson- you are the man! Great attempt on the record with that purple-lipped beauty. All those hog suckers seem to come out of the same mold- about 8 ounces short of the record. Every ounce is big with those guys, but two ounces is getting pretty darn close. I am glad to see you and your fish getting some respect here, it is a very cool creature and a very good catch on your part. Keep after them and get you’ll find those extra ounces one of these days!

I’d take a good ol’ roughfish record any day….Someday the state record carp will be mine. For now I’ll be happy to have been the former record holder of the Menomonie whitefish.

    Nice!!!

I haven’t caught one of those. Are the suckers getting active down there? They’re getting ready in the St. Cloud area, but they are not quite swarming yet.

We only got 4 nice whites and a couple redhorse today.
