You didn’t like my answer?Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559April 6, 2007 at 8:43 pm #558133Like Mike suggests, the water will have to be a bit warmer for real good fishing at the pier at Fishermans. Unfortunately, this high water has dropped the water temps. BUT, there is salvation here….
As you drive into the parking lot for that public fishing area, you will want to spend your time on the shore to your left, or down stream. The water is dropping and is moderately clear, so any sunshine on it will lift the temp a bit. I think if you wait until we see daytime highs in the 40’s again you will start to see crappie activity pick up. It doesn’t take but a degree or two of water temperature in the upward direction to get those fish going. For the most part, minnows fished under a float will be your best bait there. This area is a large flat and doesn’t have much for structure so plastics, hair and feather jigs might be a tough sell to the fish if you are shorebound. Ice jigs with waxies will work great too under a small float.
The area directly in front of that small pier decking is where the last real good sunfish bites under the ice takes place and they will not be far from there yet. They will need warmer water though, usually around 50 degrees to really get fired up. There is quite a bit of shoreline there that will serve you well. If you are standing on the left-hand pier as directed, that area to your left up to the trees is good and again all the way to the channel on your right is good. Deeper water can be had along the channel. Its about 9 feet at the end of a good cast straight out from the pier.
You’ll be largely unprotected there from the wind. If its in your face when you are on the decking, casting can get tough, but the fishing seems to improve. Weighted slip floats might be your answer in this case. If the wind is at your back while you look off the decking, move to the point and fish the channel [just trust me on this move]. Again, weighted floats might serve you best here as well.
There is plenty of fishing at that spot. Persistence will pay big dividends, again….trust me. Even though I have a boat, I have spent hundreds of hours fishing off the exact same place of which you inquire and have left there with some remarkable catches over the years.

One of my fondest early memories is fishing with my Dad under the old White Bridge with minnows under a bobber. I was only about 3-4 years old, but I still remember catching a bunch of nice crappies! For those of you not old enough to remember, White Bridge is what used to span the river from that point across to the road that ends at the water on the other side.April 6, 2007 at 8:55 pm #558140thanks for the info i was just wondering if it was ok in high water but your info will be much help seeing is how i don’t own a boat and won’t have the means any time soon but maybe i can talk dad into letting me take the boat out there for a while lol
April 7, 2007 at 1:40 am #558231Matt, talk your Dad into you both fishing the HOF Leaque on Thursday nights. First one is April 12th. Take off is at the Ponderosa ramp at 5:00 Thursday evenings and only 5.00 per person. Lots of fun and 100% payback. Fishing for 4 sunfish and 4 crappies and there is a weigh in. Theres a thread about it at the top of the Rochester Forum.
Thanks, Bill
