Took Bill’s idea to fish the Zumbro Sat. afternoon. We (Chris & I) Put in at the sandy point ramp. It’s shallow but it can be done with a small boat. The ramp at fishermans inn is still iced over, But it won’t take long for that to go! As for fishin, It was slow but did get a couple crappies & a couple bass. I fished a blue&wht Flu-Flu tipped with a minnow, And I’ll let Chris tell ya what he was using. He was changin baits so often that i lost track. There’s alot of stuff floating in the water so keep A eye out! Was nice to be on open water. Good Fishin Doug

Hey Doug,
Thanks for the report! I bet the ice is about gone already today. You got me drooling about being out in the boat!
Good Fishing,
MikeMarch 25, 2007 at 3:32 pm #553077Great news Doug. That first pic, was that a long shot towards Postiers Point taken from up by Fishermans Inn?
Thanks, BillMarch 25, 2007 at 4:53 pm #553098Yup we got wet but it felt good and neither of us really complained about it. It must have been 50 degrees out there and it wasn’t a downpour…for most of the time anyway. It was really awesome to be on Zumbro open water again and the desire to ice fish is gone Thanks Doug. The two lures that caught fish for me were a pink/white mini mite tipped with a minnow and a chartruse/green little nipper tipped with a minnow. Fishing was slow but the company was good as well as just being there
That first pic looks really cool….nice take
Chris
March 25, 2007 at 7:16 pm #553122The lake is open all the way down to Ryans Bay. I’m really liking my pick of March 27th!
March 26, 2007 at 12:14 pm #553357Chris/Doug, how exactly was the Sandy Point ramp? I know Fishermans Inn ramp is open but I’m curious as to how it was concerning how deep it was towards the channel. Did you have to paddle from the channel to the ramp or could you use the trolling motor. Have to crank the boat on the trailer? Did you get stuck anywhere there? Thanks in advance for the info.
Thanks, BillMarch 26, 2007 at 1:20 pm #553372Bill, It wasn’t that bad, We never got stuck & we did paddle out ways before using the motor, As far as loading, we did crank the boat on the trailer, Again wasn’t bad. Hope this helps. Doug
I would also add that the water is up so use it now before the water drops. There was a 2-3 fow I’d say.March 26, 2007 at 6:47 pm #553533There was a 2-3 fow I’d say. [end of quote]
Great. That means when the water drops there still may be a couple of feet of water there as some guys like to use that ramp all year if they can. Thanks for the info Bud.

I went to Zumbro Lake today for my first boat trip there. Put in at Sandy Point without a problem (about 2.5 feet deep), fished all the bays and both high banks all the way up to the dam. Never saw even a floating ice cube. The water temperatures ranged between 47 to 56 degrees. I thought the Lake was in good fishing condition. But, I only got two crappies the time I was there so the bite was real slow for me, but it was in the 70’s with a light breeze – great to be out there. Here is a picture of a crappie that hit a white plastic jig with a waxie. I guess I not only forgot how to catch them but also how to photo them. I need much more practice.

March 26, 2007 at 11:08 pm #553614Thanks for the update Dave. Look at it this way Dave, now you have an excuse with the wife to go back out there everyday till you can catch a limit in one day. And that my friend means LOTS OF FUN. Boy, that pic gets me excited. I have to get out there myself.
Thanks, BillMarch 27, 2007 at 11:11 pm #554060Dave, how far from the ramp did you have to go before you were able to put your motor down? With the 2 1/2 fow were you able to drop the motor down right away after launched? Any more info you can share will be great for everyone to know for next year when we want to use this ramp before the other two better ramps are open.
Thanks, BillMarch 28, 2007 at 2:48 am #554162I would say you have to go to about mid channel before it starts to drop to deeper depths at the Sandy Point ramp. There is so much silt in there that I just run the electric motor to mid channel so not to mess up the water impeller on the big motor.
