I had someone tell me that the shorelines were opening up and it was difficult to get onto the ice. With the warmer temps and rain coming this week, we could have some open water to fish in soon!

Don’t do it Chris! You’ll just make Bill go crazy……
I did hear of one area that still has ice that is producing some great action, but I won’t report on it until I’ve had the chance to check it out.March 21, 2007 at 1:30 am #551192As much as you know I’d love to, unfortunately work and other stuff are gonna keep me away. Let me know what you find….maybe I’ll be out on the ice this Saturday for a bon voyage…if all goes well.
March 21, 2007 at 1:44 am #551206One last ice outting huh Mike. Better hurry cause its rock-roll to the 50s come rain time making those ice cubes smaller and smaller and smaller. YES!!!
Thanks, BillMarch 21, 2007 at 1:46 am #551207Yes, I might be able to check this out on Thursday unless I get rained out….

Thanks, BillTom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559March 21, 2007 at 3:11 am #551241Mike….
You just scratch any plans you might think you have for Thursday. I have somewhere for us to go. Long rodding too.
March 21, 2007 at 3:23 am #551250About time you show up Tom. Thought maybe you found some open water and went fishin and forgot to come back. I know, you wish that was the case. Won’t be long now though. Have you been snoopying out the open water at Lake Zumbro? VERY anxious ears are waiting an amswer on that one.
Thanks, BillTom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559March 21, 2007 at 11:35 am #551324I’ve been long rodding since the Tuesday after the Zinger, but there have been issues…like current, high water, trash in the water, not nice wind….the usual early open water whines. The bite has been tough at the Zumbro and I don’t take my bulk out on the bad ice like some do. Yet.
Silver lake has been nuts. I allow myself an hour a day. It is a typical spring bite ther with some days popping out 70 fish in that hour while the next day you can find only twenty …or four….
I have managed three pigs there thus far. Mike knows of what the size of these fish is like. Two did the line in and a third made to dry ground and back in the drink again.
1/32 heads of black, chartreuse sparkle 1″ twisers [Exude} have been the bait.
March 21, 2007 at 12:37 pm #55133170 fish in 60 mins. Don’t know if I can even cast 70 times in 60 min. Well, Thats alot of fish. Good Fishin Doug

I’ve got most of the afternoon open……March 21, 2007 at 12:41 pm #551333Hows the ice melting over by the boat ramp at Fishermans Inn on Lake Zumbro? Getting to the point where this rain and wind should sink it?
Thanks, BillTom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559March 21, 2007 at 3:16 pm #551417Doug….That little goose pond has some unreal numbers of crappies in the 8-9 inch range in it. When they congregate in numbers, and they do that alot right about now in certain areas, you hardly have to cast more than ten feet and when the float sits up you reel in and will get the fish while you reel. It sounds nuts, but it does keep one’s edge honed for jigging a bit later on. The high number days happen as do the low number days, but a guy can learn a bunch more when the bite is more moderate and you have time to wipe your hands off between fish. I like watching the hits.
Bill, I haven’t been to the Zum for a couple days now, but I do plan to attack somewhere from shore tomorrow. Hopefully I will find that they have taken all of the ice for Ed’s martini garnish. I’ll bet after our chit chat on the boat landing the other weekend you think I am the ice-fishing Grinch, eh?
March 21, 2007 at 4:08 pm #551466Tom, Not doubting ya at all!! I’ve had great days catching them just never 70 in a hour. YA Da man!
Chris, You better stay off the ice or you’ll need a KickinMarch 21, 2007 at 4:15 pm #551469Mike and Bill….
I’ve just had my life threatened if I try to fish the ice this weekend so no more reports from me…probably anyway
CT – sounds like a good time…like shooting fish in a barrel.
Chris
March 21, 2007 at 4:20 pm #551472Chris, That’s not a threat, It’s a promise!!
I know there’s a 10lb plus eye with your name on it at p4
Good Fishin DougMarch 21, 2007 at 4:32 pm #551484And the tyrant reveals himself
I can’t promise anything simply because I’m so passionate about having fish below my feet and taking the boat to the river after work on Saturday just isn’t worth the cost……soooooo having ice underfoot is the next best thing. You know I’ll be more cautious than the average bear if I do decide to go. Life jacket and all!
March 21, 2007 at 4:48 pm #551487Well We’ve All done stupid Things for a fish. Just look at this. LOTW
March 21, 2007 at 5:11 pm #551502Hey Doug,
You could have hooked up an extra tow rope and went water skiing.Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559March 21, 2007 at 6:43 pm #551556I was at the Mighty Zum for a bit this am and saw a pair of “challenged” individuals doing some terrible looking ice. Myself I opted for the long rod and plastics. 1 crappie to the hand and one other nudge.
There’ll be no boating there for a bit…ice at the landing and trash in the water. The water is DIRTY and the open stuff I cast to was only at 37 degrees. We need a couple more of those. And the wind….if a guy bent over wrong he got himself a cold air enema. The wind was not good even if it was a warm [?] one from the south.
So…..I might have to go back to Silver Lake for a couple days….unless I go back to the Zum first. There’s times I think that that lake is like a pox to me.
I got the new head gasket in the outboard, but am waiting to run it for a bit before I test it on the river. I might just run it down to Silver Lake and do that….s’pose the gooses would enjoy me? lol Hey…!!! I could fish from the boat down there, couldn’t I? Thinking, thinking……
March 21, 2007 at 7:02 pm #551574I’ll bet after our chit chat on the boat landing the other weekend you think I am the ice-fishing Grinch, eh? [end of quote]
No Tom I don’t.

Chris, looking for ”ice reports”, NOT ice fishing reports. Hang in there Bud. Open water is coming.
