Announcing the 2007 Hooked On Fishing League! This year’s league begins Thursday April 12th and continues every Thursday into September. We will meet at the DNR launch near Ponderosa Campground with launch time at 5:00 p.m. each week. The ending time each week is 8:30 p.m. and you must be back at the launch by 8:30 in order to weigh your catch. There is an entry fee of $5 per person, with 100% payback – 1st place receives 60%, 2nd place 30%, 3rd place 10%. You can enter up to 4 sunfish and 4 crappies, potential of 8 total. Total weight will be used to determine winners. We will also keep an on-going point total like last year to crown an over-all champion for the year. Points will be awarded as follows for each week: 5 points for 1st place, 3 points for second place, 1 point for everyone else who registered.
You must be present at the ramp prior to 5 p.m. to register or call HOF before 3 p.m. if you will be arriving late. It is OK to show up later than 5 p.m. Your $5 entry fee is due at registration before launch or if you call to register, your entry fee is due at weigh-in time.

Questions should be directed to Mike Smith at HOF, 282-4982 or [email protected]

    Mike,

Is it only crappies/sunfish the whole season or just the early outings? I remember last year once the other species opened up we expanded it to bass, catfish, etc.

    Thanks.

Sweet! Watch out Mike, Alex might just give you more of a run for your money this year.

This is going to be great! Can’t wait. We should make a rule this year. No buggy whips! Whatcha think Ron?

    Mike,
That sounds like a GOOD TIME
Now If I only lived close enough to make a few of these. :
I suppose if I ever get a day off, I could head up 63 and just keep going…

    Hey Mike,

I hope to fish a few of these this year. Being retired I would probably get there about 2 pm to enjoy the whole day fishing. Do I just motor up to the ramp at 5:30? If I had any fish that I was going to keep for a meal I would then transfer them into a cooler and put the cooler in the vehicle. Can you then check my live well to verify it is empty? Does this sound OK to you? Or would I be breaking any rules?

If a have a partner, do we just keep our fish separate for the weigh-in?

Launch time is at 5:00. If you had fish from earlier in the day, you can transfer them to a cooler in your car. More than one person can fish in a boat, but each individual needs to keep their fish separate from any other persons fish. Each person may only weigh their own fish.

    Mike,

A few questions for you from a newbie, so excuse me if they are stupid.

    1. Do you fish it with a partner or by yourself and does your partner have stay the same or rotate.( I know you weigh individualy)? Example is a random draw with boaters and non-boaters before the event

    2. If I call in early (hard to get off work before 5, and get boat there) do I pay in at the weigh in, and then collect my check

    3. Is there somewhere in town a guy can drop off the boat, where it is secure, and I can pick it up before the tourney?

    4. Anybody looking for a partner to fish with, send me a PM. I’m not a Zumbro rookie, but I have a lot to learn

    5. Can fish be returned after the weigh in? I don’t eat a lot of fish (wife is not a fan), and hate to let it go to waste. I could also give them to someone else if they want them (asuming I can catch anything )

Thanks for putting this together Mike And thanks for the answers.

    Nope, no questions are stupid.

    1. You can fish by yourself or with another person(s). Boats, boaters or non-boaters are completely up to each person. Who you fish with is up to you, there are no drawings.

    2. If you call to register, you pay at weigh-in time.

    3. I don’t know of a place to keep your boat. I would like to offer space out here, but don’t have the room.

    5. Minnesota laws do not favor release of fish after they have been kept in a livewell. There is usually someone willing to take a few fish home for a meal, but what you do with the fish is up to you.

Alex will be a tough guy to beat. Its great seeing kids hooked on fishing. I’m fishing for the fun so I would gladly like to see him kick my hind end. Hes a diehard fisherman who deserves it. Watch out Mike as this kids good. He will be on your tail all the way.

Hopefully won’t be long and we will be able to hear the purr of the motors on Lake Zumbro. Thursday is the 15th which means the middle of March already. Getting closer to April every day. Come on Spring.
    Thanks, Bill

Brent, do you have room for parking your truck/car with the boat behind it at the work site?

It looks like a little break in the weather for Thursday evening. Still going to have the first event as scheduled. Should be fun, but dress appropriately! See you there.

That is awful nice of you to take so much of it Erick! Looks like we have less than a couple inches here with no buildup on the roads. You going to make it for the tournament tomorrow evening?

Yep, really appreciate you taking that snow from us Erick. Very kind of you. Like Mike said maybe a couple inches total here and none at all on the roads. It melts right away when it hits the concrete/blacktop so clear roads and clear ramps I would think too. Back to better weather tomorrow and it will be melting and its Thursday and that means FISH ON time.
    Thanks, Bill

WOW! To say tonight was a tough bite would be an understatement……. We had only 7 people in the first event tonight with only 4 people catching 1 crappie. No one even came close to figuring out how to get the fish to bite tonight!
    First place: Andy Anderson – 9 oz. – 1 crappie – $21.00, 5 points.
    Second place: Bill Harwick – 6 oz. – 1 crappie – $10.50, 3 points.
    Third place: Mike Smith – 4 oz. – 1 crappie – $3.50, 1 point.
Dan Thiem, Tyler Holm, Bill Cadwell, Alex Thorn – 1 point each.

Thanks to the guys that made it out tonight. I am sure the warmer weather will make catching much easier. Looking forward to next week!

VERY tough bite tonight. I only had one bite and missed it. Everyone quit at 7:55 tonight so we could take out in daylight. Felt GREAT to be back out on open water in a boat. I fished out of Mikes [HOF] boat with him tonight. [Mikes rig is the boat on the left] Very nice new rig Mike. Tylers new rig is on the right and its also a very nice rig.

Pic is of a couple of the guys getting ready to weigh the fish that were caught. The pic didn’t come out very clear. It was dark by this time and the flash lightened it up but lost clearity. Talking 50s this weekend and 60 degrees this coming Monday which should help get the fish turned on. Everyone marked alot of fish but they weren’t biting. Must be why they call it fishing. But sure was nice to be out there tonight.

    Thanks, Bill

I don’t suppose the cold shakey hands had anything to do with the blurry picture did it Bill?

Man it was a cold tough bite. Seven guys fishin and only four fish caught? Whoda ever thought?

Smith, you only beat me by one lousy ounce. But I see that we are tied in the points race. YES!

I caught a 3 ounce crappie? I didn’t know there were any that small out there.

Thanks a lot for putting this league thing together Mike. Great chance to meet other fishermen and compare notes.

Don’t forget we also have Tyler’s UPLR coming up Monday and what ever we learned last night will be applied to Monday nights outing. (Which was nothing)

I wonder how accurate that scale is for real small weights when a 8” crappie weighs 4 oz. Anyway if its off its off the same amount for everyones weight. Monday is suppose to be 60 degrees but I usually watch my 7 year old grandson on Monday nights while Mom goes to Yoga with her girlfriends. But when the weather gets alittle warmer for him I possibly might be able to get out there by 6:00 which would be late but better late than not at all. Was GREAT seeing everyone again. Next week will be warmer so we should see more people there too.

    Thanks, Bill

ps. yes Dan, next time I’m wearing my gloves for the run back to the ramp. That run was cold on the skin for sure.
