Just something to think about.
We just had a snowfall of +12″ preceeded by quite a bit of rain. This was a wet snow; quite heavy. They are already mentioning a snow event for later this week. The area where the GTG is taking place had good ice, but is also a high current area when we see melt water and run-off, both of which I think are not issues at this time. The part that I think needs to be considered is the water coming in from the Rochester branch of the river. There will be lots of salt in that water now and with an increased flow you may see some degrading on the ice right off shore on the downstream public pier…not ten feet away from shore, but at the shore. This water is 7-8 feet deep and the ice goes to pot real quick there at this time of year. Instead of allowing entry to the ice from the small public lot, you may want to consider having people come in off the Fishermans lower lot near the boat launch.
I have seen our Mr. Thiem up to his armpits where I just mentioned under almost identical circumstances and I have seen two other unknowns in the same predicament during period of time in other winters.
The bad ice comes about when we get water on the snow and a little extra current along the rocks. More new snow could hide this fact. Maybe someone should go to the lake and do a shoreline spud check on Friday or Saturday. I’d like to fish there mid-week and can do this then, but I’m not certain I can make it later in the week.
Just a thought…we don’t need an incident.
