I went out to Chester Woods last night for some crappie action. After popping about 20 holes in the area where I wanted to fish I found a spot where I was able to mark a few fish but nothing near what I was hoping to find. Hoping that the lack of fish was just from the noise I was making, the one man was up and the heater was pumping out warmth. I finally started fishing (not making noise) at about 6:15 and the first fish was on at about 6:30. Set up in 31 feet of water I found fish mostly suspended in 14′ to 21′ with an occasional fish appearing down at 26′. One again, working the highest fish was the trick. Although they would inspect the bait, the deepest fish could not be coerced into biting at all. Over the course of the next 2 and ½ hours I was able to muster a couple dozen fish with all but one being crappie. The other fish was a nice 9” gill which was also nice to see. Most of the fish were 4-8” but I did bring four 10″ fish home for dinner. The fish stopped biting right around 9:00 and I packed up at 10:00. The lure of choice last night was a larger sized pink glow Diamond jig tipped with a waxie. Minnows and minnow heads got some looks but no takers. I was fishing only one hole and I should add that minnows were not used during the peak feeding time so I don’t know if they would have worked better or not.
Now for the fun part of the night! I got home and got all set up to clean my catch. At 11:00 I began putting a clean edge on my fillet knife when all of the sudden I slipped. Yeah, BIG oops! As soon as I felt the blade hit my hand I looked at it and I said some choice words because it was bad or as my ER doctors said “moderately severe”. I grabbed a kitchen towel, wrapped it around, added some pressure, made a quick phone call, and off to the ER I went. I was comfortable with the cut since I was still able to grasp the towel firmly and I was pretty sure that my tendons were still ok. The ER docs did an awesome job fixing me up. They gave me nine subcuticular stitches and thirteen outer stitches. I’d put a pic of the finished ER product up here but I don’t want to bother the squeamish members.
The worst part of the whole ordeal…..I have to wait a week before I can hit the ice again!
Good Fishin!
