Tried out Chester Woods on Monday for the first time on the ice. I have been out there in the boat several times and was impressed so I couldn’t wait to hit the ice. Of course a fishing outing wouldn’t be the same without a stop at the local bait shop. Made it to Hooked on Fishing right at 7am and had the pleasure of meeting HOF in person. Thanks Mike, the jigs and advice worked out well.

Pulled in the parking lot at Chester and had the lake to myself this morning. With the recent snow, and being really out of shape the trek to the fishing hole was a bit of a challenge. I need to learn to pack much much lighter. Worked several areas just pass the public fishing pier. Drilled holes and used the flasher to locate fish and set up. Managed to get onto to some largemouth action in 18 feet of water were I had two tree braches visible on the flasher. Caught many smaller bass losing one larger one. The only missed fish was the larger one, imagine that Some of these bass would come up off the bottom 5 feet chasing the bait, so don’t be afraid to make them work for it. Moved on a little shallower and managed a couple decent sunfish, but the bass were so much fun I ended up moving back out for some more of that action.

Left the lake at 11:30 just as four people were finally making their way out onto the lake. Strange having a lake around here to yourself for a morning.

Sorry no pictures, the wife would kill me if I took the digital out in these temps!!

    Good luck

    Jesse

Thanks for the report Jesse. How thick was the ice where you were?

If memory serves the ice was about 5-6″. Did not find any thin areas, pretty good ice even next to the exposed trees through the ice

I hit Chester today…a good 8 inches of ice everywhere I drilled. Only managed 2 nice gills in 4 hours of fishing, but marked alot of unco-operative fish. Go deep! Find 26+ feet of water and you will find the fish suspended between 10-20 ft. I saw many anglers further south closer to the the dam area, but did not go back that far.

Thanks for the reports guys. Sounds like the ice is getting better out there. Keep the updates on fishin and on ice conditions coming please. This way we all know where the good ice is and where to beware of.
    Thanks, Bill
