I was at Red Wing with Ma today doing our antique thing. We decided to follow Lake Pepin up from Lake City. Just a little report on the ice we saw ….
Pepin itself is wide open. Not even shore ice.
Frontenac Pond is covered now and yesterday it was reported that one person was seen fishing it.
The river at Red Wing is, of course open, but Colville Park at both entries is largely ice. The new ramp is not usable now, but the old gravel ramp still has a chute that will allow some launching and channel access.
Baypoint has open water to within about fifteen feet of the bottom of the ramp, the ramp however is socked in. The docks are about 50/50 open water and iced in. It depends on where you are whether or not you will be fishing ice or water. There were people popping holes along the docks with augers where the ice was heavy enough to cut, but I didn’t make it down to see how they were doing.
I did not have time to check the Wisconsin channel ramp on the hiway, so no word as to that ramps accessability…..sorry.
The Red Wing Marina, the one next to the grain silos and rail terminal, is completely iced in, but I saw no evidence of people cutting any ice yet. This harbor has a lot of covered slips and people fish inside them out of the wind and evindence of fishing can be hard to come by. There were no vehicles parked there when we came into town and still vacant when we left.
With a report like this I guess you could say that winter is upon us, eh?
