Another New Reservoir Added To Rochester

Another new reservoir has officially been added to the list of many reservoirs in and around Rochester, Mn. A new parking lot and easy public access has been added to the lake also. The lake has been called KR7 Reservoir and Cascade Creek Reservoir according to the newspaper. Kalmar Township Officials were very cooperative in working on the parking lot which can hold 10-15 cars. I have to say ”Thank You.” The lake has crappies, bluegills and perch up to 10 inches. The parking lot is just off of 19th St NW. The lake has some nice fish in it. Mike Smith of Hooked On Fishing and I spent some time ice fishing on the lake last winter but were asked by the DNR not to publicize it. They didn’t want it fished out and as we can see now the parking lot and public access wasn’t ready yet. My advice would be to please becarefull in taking fish out of the lake as we don’t want to see the lake become fished out. I don’t know just how strong the year classes of fish are in the body of water. The lake is on the edge of town so could see alot of fishing pressure. But a meal of nice freshly caught perch I’m sure will sound good to anglers. Rochester has been blessed with alot of reserviors, creeks, Lake Zumbro, Foster Arends Lake, the Zumbro River, and Lake Pepin in Lake City is only 33 miles away. We don’t realize all the opportunities that we anglers have to wet a line here. And many of these bodies of water can be fished from shore which means quick fishin fixes for us anglers even if we have only a couple of hours to sneak away and wet a line. So Mike, since you are getting the blame in the newspaper for leaking this out [ ] guess who decided to take advantage of it and say even more. Can you say FISH ON!!!

    Thanks, Bill

I don’t think this body of water was too much of a secret any more. There were a lot of people fishing it most of last winter. It does have some good sized perch, a few nice gills, but most of the crappies are not keepers. It also has some of the largest warmouth’s I’ve ever seen. I never saw any bass or northern.
It will be another good option for us Rochester area fishermen. As Bill said, I hope people use some common sense so that it doesn’t get fished out. There are several year classes present in both perch and gills, so with good management and common sense this fishery can remain a good option for many years to come.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

I don’t believe it is fenced and the no tresspassing signs are supposed to be removed (maybe already have been). Don’t confuse this with Silver Creek which does have those problems.

Where are the fences at? I have never seen that before. This isn’t the reservoir thats on its way [but not open yet] that you see from highway #52 and highway #14. That could be the one you are thinking about. The one you see from the highway is going to have a boat ramp, beach, park, fishing piers etc but that won’t happen for another year or so. [Man, I love it when they spoil us like that. lol] And both of these reservoirs are so close to where I work which is on Valleyhigh drive. When that one opens I might be eating my suppers in my boat on the water.
    Thanks, Bill

Yep, that’s the one. I’ll need to get out there to check things out. I don’t remember the fence, but remember seeing those signs. I believe the parking area is off 19th St. if I understand what was in the paper.

    Good Fishing,

OK, finally made a trip out to the new parking lot.
It is 2 blocks West of 60th Ave. off 19th St. to the right. They did a real nice job with the lot!

Another pic from 70th Ave. The parking area is on the far side of the reservoir. The lake is completely iced over except for the little area near the road.

It used to be posted with No Hunting/Trespassing South Zumbro Joint Powers Board 507 285-8231 And it is Fenced all around the perimeter except from the Damn side where the parking lot is. By the way there were people on the ice fishing there this morning.

Decided to give Kalmar a try today, fished it from 4 to 6pm. The sunfish came one after another, most small but 3 or 4 were keeper size. All fish released. Ice is 4 to 5 inches and here to stay (hopefully)!

More PostBulletin news press on this large mud puddle.Look for Thurs. Dec. 14th Outdoor section. Sounds like somebody’s just trying to sell more minnows in the area.
