You betcha Brian. “Mini” people might get a “mite” irked and turn “purple” if he lets too much out. Well, before I “wax” poetic I better “worm” my way out of this one…

Seriously, don’t expect much from me in his story. We really didn’t talk about much. I think he has a lot of other sources besides me and will be doing a more general information report. I’ll be interested to see what is there.

The 2 guys he has in the story had just stopped in for bait shortly after he got there, and wouldn’t you know they were headed to CR7. John already had CR7 on his mind and was asking me what I knew about it. I kind of suggested he not advertise CR7 much, but oh well….. The news was bound to get out some way. I just hope people use common sense and don’t take everything they can catch.

    Good Fishing,

Well there goes the neighborhood. J/K. I’m all about making fishing spots public, because I’m always looking for spots to take my daughter out fishing. Like everyone else I just hope that folks are using common sense when harvesting fish from any fishery. I think that these small resivoirs especially need clear regulations. I’m just don’t know how many people are going to be able to take buckets of 15-20 fish out of the Kalmar res. before she’s all fished out. Maybe a period of time you are allowed to harvest, or some size regs. I don’t know what would help, but I think the key is enforcement of the regulations. I think that there is a lot of good people out there, but I also think there is a lot of people who take there chances on not running into a conv. officer.

How big is this resevoir? If it is that small, I wouldn’t see any problem with the DNR designating it a C & R body of water. To be honest, I don’t get the paper, so I’d never would have heard about it if not for the internet. I’m not much of an ice fisherman, but maybe I will have to check it out a time or two this year.

I spent time on this little pond three or four years ago with a couple of other nosey people. Same thing was there then that is there now, so the secret is that it was not a secret.

Lets not get on a Chop John Weiss campaign here…..he does an excellent job of keeping people up to date with the help of a lot of people from this area…..Mike/HOF included.

The bottom line on this puddle is that it will not provide a fishery of catch and keep. Catch and release yes. There are far better places to catch fish for a dinner, but anglers as a whole are notorious for NOT policing themselves. Last winter there were quite a few anglers on the ice out there with regular frequency. There are no trees to shelter the veiw, so keeping this quite would not have worked.

Personally I think that if they want to open these places up to fishing, the restrictions should be universal so there isn’t anywhere for arguement. Make anything , be it sunfish, perch, over 7″ returned to the water and 9″ for crappie. People wanting fish for the table can either take the dinks or go somewhere where the water can tolerate harvesting larger fish.

Regardless, this isn’t only a John Weiss issue.

Yes, John is trying to do his job. We may not agree with the way some things are done, but we all have jobs to do.

I’m not trying to negate what the article may have promoted, but I am saying that ALL of those, myself included, who were seen on that body of water in past years have played a much bigger role than just his article.

After talking this morning and learning of a few of the events that led up to this particle newspaper piece, I do feel that a bit more though could have gone into it before it was just unleashed. Still though, we even agree this morning that seeing all the angler traffic out there last winter didn’t do anything good. I know a ton of guys form the Rochester area who were on that hole every evening when people were going home from work. Seeing that kind of activity gets attention from an awful lot of quiet anglers. This is one instance where those fishing out there could keep the word to a minimum, but there was nowhere for them to hide what they were doing out there. Actually the two photographed were more responsible for this current exposure than anyone….if they’s have only kept their mouths shut when asked where they were going to fish.

John Weiss is a man who loves the outdoors. He does his articles for one reason which is to help others enjoy the outdoors more. Informing others of whats new and or going on in their area is what both the newspaper and this website tries to do. Helping others to enjoy their time on the weater more is what its about. Thats why I ask so many times of everyone that they would share with the rest of us about their fishing outtings. We ALL learn from each others sharing. Not asking for peoples spots, just share about how you did, techniques that worked and didn’t work and what kind of structure did you catch them on [flat, point, channel edge, weeds, wood, etc] Its the anglers, which include myself and everyone else, that are the ones who will make these reservoirs be good ones or poor ones for fishing. If we apply common sense and are very carefull about what we take out [fish] of these bodies of water they can be very good areas for us all to fish. These waters are fragile and we can destroy them if we keep too many fish. So please enjoy fishing these small reservoirs but also be very carefull on harvesting fish.
    Thanks, Bill
