not quite backwaters

In recent weeks I have been finding myself more and more along the shores to the Mississippi River snooping for crappies and sunfish. This generally raises the assumption of backwaters fishing…..not quite though.

Save for one total flop at Lake Zumbro last Saturday, I have been in Red Wing, fishing the docks in the harbors. I was there today and came home with mixed results to think about. I caught fish, yes. The bigger crappies just weren’t what I got. Plenty of 7 to 9 inchers, no eaters. The sunfish were equally mixed in size and a couple largemouths and a perch rounded things out nicely. This was just “one of those days” for me.

Most of those who are pacing the docks are toting their Marcums or Vexes and are doing the fish with ice rods. I have a hard time putting the long rods away when the water is still open, but my next trip will be as the others are doing. OK, I might have the long rod along too.

Today was definitely a day for precision bait delivery. My fishing partner ha d the short stuff and he was well into the fifty fish count when we packed it in. Glow red was his color on a JBlures bait. Waxies were a must for tipping. I did the jigging spoon thing with a Frostee jigging bait in the red, but switched to a ratfink in pink/white about half way thru the adventure and did just as well using that.

The use of the Marcum soon showed the benefit of being able to target specific water and fish. It became painfully apparent to me that without that tool at least, I was fishing pretty much blind and those fish today were wanting to be spoon fed. The hits were solid, but you had to be on the nose to spark a hit. And those short sticks were just the tool for that kind of control.

The Lake City marinas are pumping out fish as well from the docks and fishing there is done like-wise with the ice tackle. For those with that “serious itch”, this might provide some relief and at the same time this winter’s equipment can get a “once-over” BEFORE the actual ice season starts. My next trip to Red Wing will likely be on Sunday and I can promise that the tackle in my hands is going to be different than today’s. And if the fish don’t cooperate again, well, I’ll know the equipment is ready for when they do.

My last three trips to Red Wing though have been very productive on some seriously large crappies and sunfish. Today just wasn’t my day.

Thanks Tom. I can remember many years ago fishing over on Lake Tetonka by Waterville with my youngest daughter and oldest grandaughter. We were fishing next to these two older retired guys in a small old 14 ft boat and these guys were just hammering the fish left and right. We couldn’t even get a bite. Didn’t make a difference what lures I had and used we caught nothing. I took a very close look at just what these guys were using and it shocked me. In the middle of the summer these two guys were using ice jigs and waxies. And caught fish after fish after fish. It then registered why I saw a huge supply of ice fishing jigs out on display at the Baitbox in Waterville. There was a good reason winter ice fishing jigs were always kept out on display there. They caught fish after fish after fish. Even in the summer. But once a person thinks about it, a crappie or bluegills mouth doesn’t get any bigger in the summer than what it is in the winter. That day sure turned ”my lights on.” Sure some days they will hit bigger lures but a guy always needs to have some ice jigs along with waxies to be on the safe side.

Another thing to think about too is that older retired guys in small boats are probably the guys to keep your eyes on when out in the water. You see, when a person retires they will alot of times down size their boat. This may seem strange to some but it makes alot of sense really. Heres why. When a person retires he wants to fish alot more often and he now has the time to do it. But he doesn’t have the paycheck to pay for the expensive big boat and truck needed to haul that boat around. He also doesn’t have the paycheck anymore to buy all that high price gas for both the boat and truck. Yet he wants to fish alot more. So you downsize the boat and toll vehicle so you can fish alot more. Only so much money yet you want to be on the water alot more. Makes sense now doesn’t it?!!!

So….when you see a ”older retired looking guy” in his jon boat and wearing a lime green stocking cap – follow him. Could resist Tom. [just don’t tell anyone that we are probably the same age, ]
    Thanks, Bill

That hat…………again. Can’t quite seem to toss it, but I did wear my hot yellow one yesterday. Somehow, deep down inside, I know that that is the reason I did not do well yesterday. I guess now it’s bump the hot yellow and hop on big green. I have to have something on the head as age has allowed severe erosion of the follicle bed.

A good hat is just like a good pair of jeans. About the time they just get broke in they really show the wear.

Some time I am going to get down that way and fish those backwaters with ya Tom. They just look interesting to me.

Notice Tyler’s much-exposed brow too? Is it possible that we will have another chromie to join us Mike?

Let’s see, Tyler is in his 20’s – yep, he’s got a few years but I think he will get there eventually. Chrome is beautiful!

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Nice crappie Tyler. Enjoy the hair as it seems to go away as we get older. I’m running out of hair myself to keep covering up the chrome.
    Thanks, Bill
