Foster Arend’s Lake in Rochester is great fishery – primarily trout, but bass and panfish are also plentiful. Unfortunately the lake is within the city limits and seems especially prone to littering.

I would like to work with CrappieTom and others to make the public aware of a scheduled clean-up of the lake coming up the first Saturday in January. This is going to be a community event and a chance to be good stewards of the environment. Everyone is welcome!

There will also be instruction on ice fishing given by some talented fisherman.

    More information will follow.

    Good Fishing,

    Mike

This sounds like a great idea. Too many times I’ve seen garbage laying around the shorelines of lakes and rivers. This is a great way for us fisherpeople to say ”we care.”
    Thanks, Bill

It also would be nice to see this happen at other times of the year too.
    Thanks, Bill

Bless you guys! I always take a garbage sack where ever I go fishing. Somebody has to clean up these areas. Never, I mean, never, have I ever run across a slob leaving litter on the area. I sure hope I don’t as I might be in jail after I deal with them! I guess it means for true sportsman to just get in and pitch!

It would be nice to do this during the summer too. For some reason some people just don’t seem to care about the enviroment at the lake. Could you imagine how ugly and stinky the shorelines would be if not for the clean ups being done. I don’t know about you but I don’t find it fun and relaxing when I’m fishing when theres a bunch of stinky garbage laying all around.
    Thanks, Bill

Good point Bill. How would you do a clean-up of a lake in January ??? Especially if we have snow covering things up and the trash is frozen down ?????????

You’d be surprised and probably sickened by the amount of garbage you’d find in January around Foster Arends. There were quite a few of us last year, and there were no empty bags.

I’m not saying to cancel the January one. What I was trying to say is how about having one ”also” in a different season too. Maybe spring or summer would help also. Sorry if I wasn’t clewar in my above post and caused some confusion.
    Thanks, Bill

Being a city park, a person could probably go there every month and do this. Year round. The reason this has taken place the weekend AFTER New Years is because the kids have gone back to school and the Christmas and New Year holidays have past. The amount of traffic out there during this period is unreal. So too, unfortunately, is the trash. This is why we do it then.

This year we are offering some on-ice fishing education for those who want to learn of or more of the sport. We are not just going to pick up trash….never have done just that. The first hour is spent with a bag to help the city look cleaner and to also give the environment a break. The rst of the time is spent fishing enjoying the ice.

As always we will be providing some hand-out tackle for registered participants.

This thread is going to get fired up real soon here.

    Yes it is still set. Saturday Jan. 6th, 2007 10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.
Foster Fun Day is an event open to all of the public, fisher-people or not. It’s a free event for all whom wish to come and join the fun. Those who want to help and then fish need to have their own rods and fishing equipment.
In past years, this was hosted by Tom Sawvell, aka CrappieTom. This year he is joined by Tyler Holm, Mike Smith- owner of Hooked On Fishing Bait and Tackle, Ron Weltzin, and Chris Wallace. These individuals will be identified by armbands and are available throughout the program to help in any way.
Beginning at 10 AM, the sign-in takes place and bags for garbage are handed out. The troops hit the ice and the first 20 feet or so of shoreline. The clean-up generally lasts about an hour. When all of the bags are at the gate in the parking area after the clean-up, a drawing for signed-in and registered participants under the age of 12 will take place and winners will receive free tackle donated by our sponsors. This is tackle that can be used when we all descend on the lake again to spend the remainder of the time there fishing for those elusive trout found there.
Grills, charcoal, hot dogs, buns and condiments will be provided for all those who are pre-registered. Others may feel free to bring whatever to share or to cook for themselves. Beverages are of participants’ providing and we prefer NO ALCOHOL.
Tom, Tyler, Mike, Ron, and Chris are all looking forward to seeing a lot of people, young and old and every age in-between. Please come join us to help clean up a wonderful park/lake and enjoy with us a few hours doing what we truly love doing….fishing and teaching it!

    Eyebuster…

Come to Roch on Hiway 14. Take a right onto broadway at the crossroads. Broadway=hiway 63 north. Follow broadway to 37th Street and take a left. Go to the next light and take a right onto east river road. Go about a half block to the lot on the left.

    ****CANCELED****

Mike and I had a real good discussion on Saturday morning regarding the safety challenges we are facing with the ice at Foster. The ice sheet is getting thin enough to raise some serious concerns and the shoreline ice in some areas now is well past the point of being safe. Choosing to be on the side of good judgement we have decided to cancel this event, even for a shoreline event. There are just too many negatives to consider and we don’t want to be responsible for any accident that might be associated with this activity.

We will monitor the ice conditions for a possible later date, but at this time have not scheduled one. We are sorry for the cancelation, but safety is, and has been, our primary consideration and unfortunately the weather has not dealt us favorable conditions.
