You beat me to it. I saw the same thing and said, “WHAT?”
We need to get more info on this.
This could harm the trout fishery if they aren’t carefull. I wonder what the DNR thinks of this. Would be VERY interesting to find out. I knew they were digging the river deeper by where the soccer field was behind Hy-Vee North but didn’t know where they were putting the dirt. Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks, Bill
I bought last Saturdays paper last night after hearing this. The dirt is coming from the part of the river by Mayo Civic Center. My ”guess” is for flood contol to make it deeper. I know they are laying rock where I mentioned but I wonder what else they are doing there now.
Thanks, Bill
Mike Fischer drove over for a look this morning. He said they are dumping truckloads of dirt into the lake by the north side of the beach area. Maybe they are extending the shallow area by the beach and cutting down the severe dropoffs???
Good Fishing,
Mike
I walked over by the 4th St bridge at noon – there is a back-hoe in the water by the Gvt Center loading a truck.
The truck hauls it to a spot across from the Civic Ctr where its dumped (stockpile area) – then another back-hoe is loading dump trucks for the “disposal”.
Seems like a pretty nasty thing to do to such a pretty little spot of water…

It would seem fertile black dirt might add more weeds to foster now as well and make it warmer wouldnt it
I talked to the DNR here in Rochester today and the person I talked to didn’t know it was happening. She said that maybe Kevin at the Lake City office might know something. Haven’t had a chance to talk to him yet.
Thanks, Bill
Here are a few pictuers taken by Mike Fischer of the current work being done.
Mike: Looks like they are filling in right next to your favorite rock.

Yep, there goes that spot!
Good Fishing,
Mike
Thanks for the info and legwork Tom. I was out there this morning and I’m amazed at how much stuff has been dozed out there already and how much is still piled downtown to move. Looks like the lake will have a new peninsula.
There was just a news story on FOX about this. The woman speaking on behalf of the project said that once the project is finished you will never know that this was done. Possibly not a fisherperson that knows the lake She also said that this fill is going in places where the drownings have occured and the fish are resilient enough that it wont affect them. Anyway, it was also said that the DNR is not worried about the alteration. We’ll see what it does for the fishery when the hard water season shows itself.

So, I’m sitting at Foster Arends for about ten minutes today eating my lunch and four dump trucks made thier way down to the new road on the lake where the bulldozer sits. Being reminded of what was said on the news report that “you won’t even know that this was done” I’m thinking how is this possible? If you haven’t seen the work going on lately you should check it out….there’s TONS of goose turd…err sand out there.
Doesn’t it stand to reason that some of this fill will contain bacteria that may be harmful or maybe extra fertilizer that will boost the weed population? I’m thinking out-loud and my concerns are unfounded but does anyone else think that’s a lot of fill for nothing to change?

Sounds like a reasonable assumption to me. I hope we are wrong…

If I remember right from school more people get giardia (bever fever) from dirt than the water. Could be wrong. And yes It would be hard to find a fertalizer that will not promote algae and weed growth!
It is sad that some people care more for the looks of the shoreline the the health of the water
Besides some nasty lookings sludge floating out there they did a good job at making the sand disappear.
I hope you are right Tom. I DON’T want to see this body of water ruined by their stupid thinking/mistake. You just don’t dump sludge into a body of water. Sand is fine but not crap like what was dumped into it.
Thanks, Bill
