We live in a rural part of Dodge Cty. My daughter was on her way to work on last Friday morning, just a little after 7am. It was just starting to get light out. She pulled off the gravel road we live on, and on to Cty 13. She drove about a mile, and swerved to avoid one of the Lord’s critters – a furry black and white one.

Unknown to her was the fact that she was being followed by one of our county sherrif deputies. He saw her swerve, flipped on the lights, and pulled her over. Oddly, he didn’t pull over behind her, but along side her car.

The deputy walked up to Amy, tapped on the window, which she rolled down, the deputy asked for her license and proof of insurance. He then asked her if she had been drinking. Amy pointed at her watch – and said “it’s a bit early for that”. The officer then asked why she swerved. “I saw a skunk”. The deputy says “I didn’t see a skunk” – to which Amy said – “there isn’t alot of light yet, but it was there”. The deputy was still not beliveing her – thinking he had a DWI.

About that time – Amy looks in front of her car, and waddling on the road is the skunk – toward them. “There it is!” she says.

The deputy throws her license and insurance card in the window, she rolls it up and throws the car in to reverse, and backs away as the skunk hoists its tail. The deputy was standing there as she backed to a field drive, hung a U turn and pulled away.

Good for the skunk! I have always been supportive of those who protect and serve but my recent experience with this same group leads me to believe that they couldn’t find that skunk if it was sitting on the hood of their car.

By the way, 22 years ago I was hit by a drunk driver at 7:05 AM. So, yes people do drink and drive at that time.
