Lake Zumbro Report – 9/14

With the beautiful weather today, I just had to make a trip to Lake Zumbro. The water was very clear and 65 degrees. I had hoped to find more crappies today than I have been finding recently, but the big bluegills had different ideas.

My lure of choice once again was a mini-mite jig tipped with a waxworm. Last time I was out (2 weeks ago) the fish had come up into the shorelines and were shallow. I started in the same location today only to find the fish had moved.

They had gone much deeper away from the shorelines and docks. The best depth today was 10-14 ft. down over about 20-25 FOW. I simply straight-lined over the side of the boat. I let the wind move me and stayed positioned with the trolling motor, but slow was the only speed they wanted today.

Once I found them, it was a lot of fish and a lot of fun! The size of the bluegills is just amazing – lots over 8 inches. A few crappies did show up and the largest were pushing the 12 inch mark. It was another great day to be out. Hope you get a chance to enjoy some of the great fishing soon!

Yes Mike, it was a beautiful day out there and the fish were more then cooperative. I work with a guy, computer support services who loves to fish but just doesn’t get much of a chance to fish because of time.
So, took Mike Sloan out and of course we ran into Mike/HOF.
Between the three of us, we finally figured were they were at. Still in deep water, 20-25 feet and 12 to 14 feet down. Straight line jigging with a mini-mite, tipped with a waxie and bang. Sloan doesn’t keep or eat any fish and I had all I could use at home. Catch and release was the order of the day. Believe me, were caught a lot and released a lot.
Mike/HOF was nearby and we could see he was having success as well, just look at his pictures.
The time of year is right, so get out there and enjoy.

Thanks for the report. I was thinking of bringing out a few kids this weekend if the weather is nice, and looking for a few of those babies, and maybe try to find some strippers you reported on last week.

    Thanks again.

    Hey Ike,

Nope, that was laying there after I put it into action earlier in the day. I got bit off 3 times in about 10 minutes and thought I would throw something larger to see if I could do battle with a northern, but to no avail….

p.s. I really like your signature line!

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Of course the fishing was good as I was out of town on the Mississippi River. With the water temps dropping like they are the bite should even get better too. Nice fish Bud.
    Thanks, Bill
