With the beautiful weather today Ron (RHW) and I just had to get out to Lake Zumbro. The lake had taken a lot of fresh water from all the recent rain, but had returned to normal levels just this week. We were feeling optimistic about the chances of having a great day due to cooler water temps. We were not the least bit disappointed!
The water had cooled another 7-8 degrees from 2 weeks ago and was now in the low 70’s. This was a good signal to try for some shallower fish – up near shorelines and docks. We used bobbers set at 3-4 ft. to suspend our mini-mite jigs tipped with a waxie.
The fish were cooperative all day, seldom making us wait more than 15 seconds for the bobber to move indicating another aggressive fish. The majority of our fish today were bluegills, or should I say bullgills? Most were over 7 inches and many were 8-9 inches – true slabs. We did get some crappies with a couple pushing the 11 inch mark.
I’m looking forward to a fresh dinner of bluegills tonight! YUM!!! The best part is that the fishing will just continue to get better as the water continues to cool. I expect the crappies to start going strong soon. Hope you can get out to enjoy some of this great fishing soon!
