Had a chance to get out on the water for the first time in a few weeks, and decided that Lake Zumbro was a good bet. I had been hearing that the fish were suspended over deep water. I found that to be true and false, depending on location.
The weather was much better than we have had for the past several days with the air temp a comfortable 81 degrees. The water temp was a bit warmer at 83 degrees. I looked for fish on my locator before putting a lure in the water. I starting marking fish suspended in the 8-12 ft. range over 15-20 FOW. I also found some fish near the bottom in 10-12 FOW.
The lure was my favorite mini-mite jigs tipped with a waxie. I went straight over the side of the boat down about 8 ft. Some of the bites were definate strikes, but most were just a little nibble or sudden added weight. Whenever I felt anything change – set the hook, and it was usually a fish.
I ended up catching a large amount of fish in the 3 hours I was out. Crappies up to 11 inches, bluegills up to 8 inches, and lots of white bass in the 9-11 inch range. The big carp were making their presence known with lots of splashing and there were also a lot of other fish surfacing while chasing bait fish. It was a great day to be on the water again! Hope you get a chance to get out and enjoy the fishing soon!
