Had the itch to get out and do some fishing with the new boat this morning. Got off work at 0500, hooked up the boat and headed for the vast waters of Lake Zumbro. On the docket for today was to target some pike trolling raps. Hooked on a green and black taildancer and proceeded to search for some cool water for those ferocious beasts of the deep. Trolled taildancer down about 10-12 feet in 18+ feet of water. Had one larger fish strike and get off (imagine that) not quite sure what it could have been. Managed to troll up 4 white bass until jaws of the deep came a knockin. I switched to a firetiger rap running 50 feet behind the boat. I trolled a sharp break shoreline dumping directly down to 10-15 foot shelf before fading into the abyss, thats when it happened. I hit the prime trolling speed of 2.5 miles per hour and it felt as a cheetah running at full speed smacked the lure with thunderous proportions. I grasped the rod tightly setting the hook with the force of ten nuclear bombs, THE FIGHT WAS ON!! The drag was screaming like a tornado siren at midnight piercing the quiet city streets. I managed to tire the beast and force the massive lunker to the boat, it was a freshwater drum…had ya going rite I managed to troll up one pike about 2 lbs. I casted a deep weed edge with a spinner bait and had two pike and one bass follow to the boat but no takers!! About 0930 figured I better get home to bed…back to work at 5 Nice to have a decent lake close to hit when you need that fishin fix
