After the rain had passed through this morning my dad and I decided to make a trip out for some smallmouth. It had been a couple weeks since I was last out, so I was ready to go.

The water level is down a good 10 inches from where it was at in the beginning of the season. First spot started off well, catching 3 small ones on a jig. We worked our way upstream catching a a few more little ones. In one spot a couple of fish had broken the surface, so I decided to put on a topwater. That turned out to be a good idea as I caught a 15″ and then a 16″. Things would only be heating up from there. We were catching our fair share of small ones until I had a big one hit my crank and then hit it again. The fight was on!! It jumped out of the water three times before I was able to land it. The tale of the tape said 18″. Then not 5 minutes and 10 yards later, boom another huge one. This one also stretched the tape to 18″. 10 minutes after those two beauty’s were landed dad caught a 17″ and lost one that was just as big.

At the end of the day we caught many small ones in the 8″ range. Also 2 18″, 1 17.5″, 2 17″, 3 16″, 1 15″, and a handful in the 12″-14″ range. It could have been even better but we lost 3 more that were at least 16″. Even had the camera along to take some picures. Only 15 more pictures to go on the disposable before we can see them. I have had some great days fishing, but this one ranks right up there with the best.

Sounds like a very fun day along with some good father/son bonding time. What body of water were you guys fishing?
    Thanks, Bill
