Going Fishing?? Bring the right tools

As I posted yesterday I had a nice morning on the water fishing with my friend Tom on the Mississippi backwaters. Though, we had a great time, the thing that has bugged me since was the badly hooked northern I ended up bring home which resulted in lesson in being how to be better prepared for my next trip out.

One of my favorite ways to fish bass is using top water, and with top water lures come multiple treble hooks. Usually a good pair of pliers will do the trick, but not this time. In yesterdays case, the hooks could have easily been quickly cut and the fish returned to the water. A sad lesson in not being prepared on my part.

Sure, I had all the right tools for catching the fish, but I was not prepared for releasing. I fish muskies on a regular basis and within my musky box I have a set of heavy duty wire cutters and a jaw speader. Now they will be making their way into my regular fishing gear.

So I just want to mention to be prepared for the unexpected. I know I will be next time.

Good advice Andy. Sometimes it is impossible to release a healthy fish, but it’s good to be as prepared as possible.
