Last Friday night, I was to meet a buddy over to Waterville. I called him as I was leaving my house, to get him an ETA, only to find out he was to be delayed….
What to do? – hit a small stream to pass the time….
I fished 3 pools. The first had crystal clear water, just like looking in to an aquarium. I could see fish, rocks, weed clumps, you name it – well in to what looked to be 4-5′ of depth. Tryed spoons, cranks, a spinner bait, but no bites.
The 2nd pool I tryed was being fished by a couple of 14-15 y.o. boys, and they were making a fair amount of noise, made a few casts, wished them well, and left.
At the 3rd pool, and nearly out of time before needing to hit the road, I made 3 casts – nothing. The sun was shining, the water like glass, quiet – a really nice spot.
Made a 4th cast, and as I was retrieving, spotted a NP in the water, just to my left – depth was about 18″, a foot or off the bank. It was watching me watch it.
I shifted my reteive to attempt bring my Dare Devele in front of the fish, so it would see it. At the same time, the fish began to slowly swim away, my left to right, and my lure ended up behind the fish.
But not to far behind – the fish saw it, spun around in its own length and smacked it. Two hard hits on the drag and some splashing later, I had a nice eater…23.75″ long, 8″ girth.
