I am building a backyard barn for all my stuff (wheeler, ice fishing stuff, golf cart, etc, etc) I am building a green treated floor, and have been told that a sand base is fine for water runoff, or grade 2 rock.

Is sand ok? Is rock better? I don’t want any rot down the road…no 4×4’s under my gig, gonna sit the floor flat on the ground because of the weight that is gonna be in there…

Any advise? Also, anyone know where to pick up rock or sand around rochester without giving away my 7 year old? My shed is 12×16′ so I figure a yard of material should do me…??

    Any help is appreciated.

    Hey Big D.
I think I can help you out on the sand if you don’t mind shoveling it out of a large sand box that is no longer in use.
The sand would be in eyota.
If interested, shoot me an e-mail here and I can help you out.

Well, hee hee, that’s what I did today, filled in probably half of what I need from my kids’ old sand box, another box just may do me, then I would need to pack it and would be good to go…i’d definitely be interested if the sand were free, send me a PM with details or email [email protected]

    thanx

Use the two inch rock. It will drain water better. then place a heavy 6 0r 8 mil plastic under the shed and over the rock, which in turn will help keep your shed dryer . you should use a 6 inch base of rock , that should be about 4 yrds of rock

That’s good advise, thanx, didn’t think of that….hope I don’t regret setting it directly on the ground…….

Thanx for the replies so far…I think I am deep enough into the project right now that I can’t change much for plans (floor is built)

I can help you with any questions you might have about treated lumber. PM me if you want. Be certain to use “ground contact” treated lumber and make darn sure that your sloping around the shed makes the H2O run AWAY from the shed! Sand should be OK, pea rock would be better.
