Well after a quick stop at HOF to get the scoop on fishing and some bait I ventured out onto the Foster ice yesterday afternoon. Yes still some ice there. The shoreline is starting to breakup some and you have to jump over the water at the landing on the north end. Looks like the beach area has plenty of water showing too. Open water won’t be too far away with next weeks rain and warmer temps.
Fished the north end off the hitching post from 12-26 fow. Minnows, power bait in rainbow color and waxies on a pimple were the choices for the day. Picked up some small gills in the weeds near shore with the waxies and two trout in deeper water. One 17″ and one 14″ Both went back swimming. Both trout came on the power bait. Better see Mike to stock up if you need some. Ice varies from 4″ to 8″ where I was at. Looks like the spring area on that end is active. The ice was looking dark there and I’m too fat to walk over and check it out. A group of 5 was fishing the shallow water in the NE corner and I saw one fish caught. Mid afternoon a group of 3 was in the SE corner between the pier and the beach but too far away to see any action. If you’re still wanting to give the ice gear a last hurrah I wouldn’t wait too much longer.

I had so much fun yesterday that I had to do it again today for a few hours. No panfish today but did put three trout on the ice. Had to keep one that I damaged the gills on and it was bleeding bad. The other two went back. Same area as yesterday. Minnows worked for me today but a couple guys fishing shallow had 4 on waxies. Some kids fishing with Dad had more fun breaking up the shoreline ice than fishing until one of them got a good soaker. You need to be careful getting on and off the ice now.

Hey Brian, sounds like you are having alot of fun out there. Thanks for the report. Powerbait works good at Fosters in open water by placing it on a hook with a splitshot above it 18-24 inches and casted out. Get the light tight so you can see a hit by the fish and set the hook. Or if the fish are up high then a bobber with a minnow or even a couple of waxies 2-4 feet under the bobber.

Anybody else been out? Sounds like the temps are going to be nicer next week even which should melt some snow and hopefully melt some ice too as its open water time in my book. Come on spring.

Thank goodness it was only waist deep as there is some very deep water there. I think I’m going to start a new thread on ice conditions as with the warmer temps and alot of rain this week possibly everyone will be looking for open water VERY soon. So please post everyone any updates you come across on ice/open water conditions on that thread.
    Thanks, Bill
