Ok guys & gals, Can you say first ice. I ‘ve been out a few times already. Did CW Yesterday. fished a small pink & white jig tipped with a waxie Over 21 ft of water, Did real well On blue gills, The bite was good all day!! Only drilled 4 holes & I had fish in all 4. VEX is a plus, Even got a nice crappie, & 4 bass. Please use caution when headed out on the ice, Oh yah, Ice was 5 in thick everywhere I was, I didn’t get out into the current areas, I’ll wait a bit for that, Or until I see someone thats braver than I. Can’t wait to hit it again SOOOON

Thanks for the report Doug. Sounds like you had one of those days on the ice that we have all been waiting for. This heavy snow is going to hurt the ice condition now I’m afraid. Be very carefull out on the ice anywhere now for sure. Best to be safe than sorry. Better to wait and be safe as better conditions will come.

    Thanks, Bill

Most of the ice was in good shape prior to the snow. The snow will act as an insulator and the ice thickness will not grow as fast as it would have. The only problem areas will be where the ice was not safe prior to the snow, because they may now be covered up.
As the DNR cautions, no ice is ever 100% safe. We still have a few ice spuds left if anyone needs one.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Mike, I see you carry two different kinds of ice spuds. Can you please explain the difference between the two? Also which one do you use yourself?
    Thanks, Bill

One has just a plain shaft, and the other has rubber handles and is a heavy-duty model.

Do both work about the same or is one heavier than the other which gives more impact on the ice when hitting it? How thick must the ice usually be when it doesn’t punch through? Inquiring minds would like to know more. I bought the one that looks less expensive from you when you were in the hospital a couple years ago but haven’t used it yet as usually the ice is pretty thick before I go on it like around Christmas time[chickenman ya know, lol]. This year I have gone on 4 inches instead of my usual 8 inches so maybe I’m foolishman this year instead? lol.
    Thanks, Bill

You’ll always be chickenman to me Bill…
The heavier the spud, the further it goes into the ice. The ice will hold up to almost any spud hit when only an inch thick.

Hi Mike, This is good advice. However, let me take you back about 4 years ago on first ice at Wilcox! You must have a change of heart! JJ

Hey JJ, you know me. I’m out there before most people, but I am very careful. Now, Billy is the one that balances my “walking on thin ice” adventures.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike
