Below is a link to the Southern Minnesota Lakes Forum which talks about some of the dangerous ice in Southern Minnesota and possiblities of maybe why. Seems like ice is ”better/thicker in Shallow” and ”alot thinner out deeper” still. Also the snow insulates the ice keeping it from not getting thick. Please becarefull.

Staying SHALLOW is much safer than deeper water as reports seem to indicate thicker ice in shallow water where the ice in deeper water hasn’t had time to thicken yet. Example the posts talk about 4 inches in shallow where there are only 2 inches in deeper water. [only half the thickness in deeper water] Sounds like the Mississippi River ”shallow” [gotta stay shallow] waters are the place to be ”if” you stay shallow and away from the holes and current to find better safer water. If fishing other bodies of water then stay in shallow water areas.
    Thanks, Bill
