The water from Sandy Point down towards Fishermans Inn has skimmed over except for the channel area. This stretch of the river doesn’t seem to ever be safe when frozen over from reports I hear every year from others as too much current as the narrower river starts to widen out some in that stretch and there is more current in that area. From Fishermans Inn down to as far as I can see there is skimmed ice but will take ”A LONG TIME” before its useable ice. As you get down by Grandpa Ed’s Supper Club and Ponderosa Campground area the water is wide open but the boat ramp at Ponderosa is freezing in. Ice will come eventually but will be several weeks before any possibilty of walking on it I would think as its a river too which means current.
    Thanks, Bill

It is certainly wise to stay off the ice until it is ready, but don’t be surprised if you hear about people out on it sooner than a few more weeks. Once the water temp gets down to the freezing point, it will freeze quickly and build ice very rapidly under favorable conditions.
Stayed tuned for up to date reports on the ice conditions around the area.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

On the way back from Red Wing today I drove through Lake City and saw that Lake Pepin is wide open water. Looks like a couple days of warmer weather and then it will be 20’s for highs with lows in the teens and lower. Ice is coming, it just takes time. The backwaters where there is shallower water will freeze first and be available for fishing before bigger and deeper waters. Please remember that no ice is gauranteed safe so please be carefull when approaching ice.

    Thanks, Bill
