As we approach the Ice Fishing Season it would be very helpfull if everyone would post any ice conditions they come across so ice fishermen know where to find ”safe” early ice. Thanks in advance everyone for sharing what you come across on ice conditions. Also please feel free to share/post all you want both here and in the Ice Fishing General Discussion Forum about your ice fishing outtings and ice fishing knowledge so everyone can learn more about catching fish under the ice.

As always, please becarefull when on the ice and make sure it is thick enough before going on the ice.

Have a great ice fishing season everybody.

    Thanks, Bill

Anybody know if Lake Zumbro is ice covered at this point? Might try to get the boat in there this weekend

Hey Jake, great to see you on here again. Lake Zumbro is wide open water. I checked out the boat ramp at Ponderosa Sunday afternoon and the water is way down. You would have to try it to see but I would advice bringing some waders to help you get the boat back on the trailer as the water is very low so driving the boat up to and on the trailer may not work. The thing I don’t like about the ramp at Fishermans Inn is the concrete goes out only so far and then your boat trailer just drops off the ramp into deep water. Not good, trust me. I’ve had that happen many years ago when they dropped the water this low. And of course Sandy Point ramp has very low water also. If you get out on the water let me know how you do fishing and also how the ramp worked. I have the same craving for one more trip on Lake Zumbro fishing as you do I see.
    Thanks, Bill

Where ya been Mr. Jake? Oh that’s right – you like to shoot guns and stuff….
I think Zumbro bays will be iced in shortly. The temps are heading to the teens in the next few days and the water temp is low enough to make ice quickly. As Bill said, the lake is at winter level and getting a boat launched will be a little tougher.

I did a little scouting around the MS. yesterday. Found some ice in most places, but nothing thick enough to walk on yet. Won’t be much longer!

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

WOW! 14 degrees tonight, 7 degrees tomorrow night, 14 degrees Friday night, never making it more than a couple degrees above freezing through Sunday!!! I think that ice is coming to a backwater near you!

    Good Fishing,

Now we ALL know what gets you excited. ICE.

Yep, its going to be COLD. Lets get that ice made first before snow comes so we have good thick safe ice then it can warm up so we can stand being outside in it.
    Thanks, Bill

ps. Mike, got that first hole drilled yet?

Drilled a hole in the wall at the shop today. Does that count? I won’t be drilling any holes in the ice until it gets several inches thick. The ice spud will do the trick for the first few times I go out.
    Come on ice!!!

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

After our 45 degree weather on Monday [Nov. 28] we will be getting some really cold weather and that should make some good solid safe ice. I’m getting my ice fishing stuff out and getting ready. Ice is a comin.
    Thanks, Bill

Yep, today will probably take care of any remaining snow. Then lows in the single digits or low teens the rest of the week and highs below freezing! That should get er done!!! I will be surprised if the shallow backwater areas near Wabasha are not ready for ice fishing by next weekend.

    Good Fishing,

I stopped by Foster Arends Lake today and it is ”wide open water.” This lake has some deep water so it will take some time to freeeze over and have good solid ice. Please use care on this lake once it does freeze as there are some springs in there too. It does appear that the cold temps will be around for awhile now so mother nature should start making some ice. We will just have to wait awhile.
    Thanks, Bill

Yep, Foster’s and Lake Zumbro are not early ice spots. The backwaters of the MS. like Wilcox, West Newton, The Dike Road, The Finger Lakes, some of the boat harbors, and probably several other shallow water protected spots are the early ones. I think there will probably be possibilities for some ice fishing this weekend. As always, be extremely careful! Use an ice spud to check ice thickness and do not fish alone.

Went over to the Wabasha/Kellogg area today intent on getting out on some ice. Checked Wilcox, the Dike Road, and the Wabasha Harbor. The ice was only 1″ – 1 1/2″. No one had been on the ice yet and I think a couple more days of good cold might be what is needed.
I did fish off the docks, but through the ice in the Wabasha Harbor. Got several largemouth bass, a couple sunfish, a crappie, and a perch. It was just nice to pull some fish through the ice again!

Be safe! Use an ice spud to determine ice thickness ahead of where you will walk, and do not go alone.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Thanks for the report Bud. Its still pretty early yet. Only 3-4 days after no ice at all as it melted. Takes time. Which means now is a good time for everyone to get out their ice fishing stuff, clean it up, replace the shortage of good ice fishing jigs in the tackle trays/boxes, get that new rod and/or reel and other goodies that they will need for their ice fishing outtings. And Mike at HOF has everything you will need. And I believe he has ice house licenses too. Am I correct on the Mike?
    Thanks, Bill

    Hey Bill,

Yes, we have licenses. We also have new ice auger blades for less than anyone in the area. Not to mention the largest selection of ice jigs – over 20,000 in stock! Don’t forget about our custom ice rods!!! If you need something for ice fishing, we’ve probably got it and at a good price.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Now that sounds like a smart way to ice fish. Fishing off of the docks at marinas with drilling holes and fishing all while you are on the dock for safety. Nice safe way to do it and ”never” step foot on the ice. Best of both worlds that way-safe as you ”don’t” step foot on the ice and yet you get to fish first ice period too.

I stopped out to HOF yesterday to buy my portable ice house license and came across something I just had to have, [really lots of things I had to have ]. We all have seen those wire ice rod holders that hold your rod outside on the ice and your rod is held in the rod holder fairly close to the ice. Well Mike had those ones in stock PLUS some that are twice as tall. Now that caught my attention. As we get older and/or have back injuries we don’t like to bend anymore than we have to and when standing outside or sitting on a bucket outside or sitting on a bucket or seat inside a ice house/shack we can set our rod in this taller rod holder and be able to grab that rod when a fish is on without having to bend way over. Ice fishing just keeps getting better all the time ”Thanks” to Mike who is an ice fishing fanatic who spends more days on the ice than anyone I know, who does product testing of different fishing products both on ice and open water to see if its a product that will do what he needs it to do, who does testings of products to find the best lures/products to see if they are items that work best in/on the Rochester Area Lakes and Rivers and if they catch alot of fish here then he will carry that product. If it doesn’t then he will just let the other stores carry that product that doesn’t work well here. In otherwords HOF carries only the products that work well catching fish instead of products that only catch fishermen. Thats the benefit you get when buying from a guy who fishes alot more than most people do. And Mike has gone beyond that even and has RHW and myself testing products too so he is getting feedback from others who spend alot of time on the water too. This past year has been alot of fun and very educational testing out different lures and colors and different products to see what works best on our lakes. And finding which lures/products that work best here and using them on other bodies of water I have found that they work very well there too. So if you want lures and products that will catch fish for you and not just the hyped up products that are advertised that mostly catch only fishermen then HOF is the place to be at when you want/need good fish catching products. I really appreciate all that Mike/HOF and staff does to make everyones fishing that much better. Helping others to enjoy their time more on the water/ice is not only what this site is for but also is what HOF is about. Its your one stop shop for most everything you need. And run by a fishing fanatic [ ] so you get the best of the best products, service and info on hot bites.

Sorry I got so long winded here but alot of people don’t realize what all HOF and IDA do to help you catch more fish, know what products really do work, and to help you enjoy your time on the water more. An unbeatable combination.
    Thanks, Bill
