Most of you who know me, I am a die hard panfisherperson. I am very selective in my equipment. Has to be just right, balance, weight and practical, plus pure fun. I have promoted the longer noodle rods. Want some fight in hooking those babies, regardless what size they are.
I had Mike Fischer, rod builder geru put together not one, not two, but three special rods. 9 footers, two piece rods that are about 3 weight fly rod blanks. Mike/HOF was somewhat skeptical at first, but after watching me have all the fun, decided to join the ranks. He too now exclusively uses this rod for panfishing. They cast a country mile, very sensitive to ticks, quick hook set and just a blast wiggling while reeling in a nice sized crappie or bluegill.
Well, while out at the shop yesterday, I noticed Mr. Fischer had one on the rack. A real beauty to be sure. If that is sitting there much longer, well I may end up owning four. Hey ask Uncle grump, he is a convert. I have let others handle mine while fishing and they fell in love with this limber rod. Puts some fun back into panfishing.

    Dang it RHW!

    Don’t go telling everyone that!!!

I’ve been using a 4 weight fly rod out of the boat for years…for panfish. The only drawback with a fly rod is using fly line…it takes a little more weight to take the tear drop to the feeding zone.

I’m thinking with your/Mikes set up mono would cure that issue.

You are so right! With that type of setup it’s completly changes the way a person pan fishes!

They fish with a Okuma spinning reel attached to the rod. No fly rod line Brian. From what I have seen they have a very nice bend to them when fighting a fish [even small ones] which means ALOT of fun.

Ron is correct about the converted fly rods…they are a blast, once you get used to the extra length.

I built my own, from a 2pc 9′ 5wt flyrod. Hooked a white bass this summer – what a riot. Also caught some NP on it throwing 1/8 oz spinner baits. Fun!
