Today was good, bad and indifferent. Mike/HOF and I went to Lake City today, then ended up in the backwaters around Kellogg. Started off very promising at Lake City, caught some nice big crappies, then it just died. Fished them about 12 feet deep with Mini-Mites tipped with a waxworm. The bites were very subtle and one had to pay close attention to the ticks. Stright lining was a bit better, at least you could feel the tick and set the hook. It ended up so dead, we decided to move on down the river toward Kellogg and check out a couple more spots. Again, started off fast, but most of the fish were small. Oh, there were some nice keepers, but more small ones than the big boys. This time, only 3 feet below the bobber tipped with a waxworm. As the sun started to set, we were catching some nice fish only a foot and a half to two feet below the bobber. It is like they headed for the surface as the sun got lower. Kept 10 beautiful crappies and two nice bluegills for a nice fish fry for my father-in-law as this guy is nuts over pannies. Much to our surprise the greater % were crappies and only a hand full of gills.
When the sun came out, it was pleasant, but man when it hit the tree line, she got cold and damp real quick. Fish body temps are down right cold. They want meat, no plain Jane’s for them today.
