It was So-So today

Today was good, bad and indifferent. Mike/HOF and I went to Lake City today, then ended up in the backwaters around Kellogg. Started off very promising at Lake City, caught some nice big crappies, then it just died. Fished them about 12 feet deep with Mini-Mites tipped with a waxworm. The bites were very subtle and one had to pay close attention to the ticks. Stright lining was a bit better, at least you could feel the tick and set the hook. It ended up so dead, we decided to move on down the river toward Kellogg and check out a couple more spots. Again, started off fast, but most of the fish were small. Oh, there were some nice keepers, but more small ones than the big boys. This time, only 3 feet below the bobber tipped with a waxworm. As the sun started to set, we were catching some nice fish only a foot and a half to two feet below the bobber. It is like they headed for the surface as the sun got lower. Kept 10 beautiful crappies and two nice bluegills for a nice fish fry for my father-in-law as this guy is nuts over pannies. Much to our surprise the greater % were crappies and only a hand full of gills.
When the sun came out, it was pleasant, but man when it hit the tree line, she got cold and damp real quick. Fish body temps are down right cold. They want meat, no plain Jane’s for them today.

Thanks for the report Ron. Good to see you are feeling better and back out fishing.

Went for a little ride on Lake Zumbro tonight for a couple hours. It was very peacefull. I was the only boat out there so I had the whole lake to myself. Gave me a chance to get a few more hours on the jon boat motor and just cruised around. Very pretty in the dark with the lights from the houses showing and some people have fancy lights up and on. It was a great way to just relax on the water. The water temp was 49.1 degrees so it is dropping which should get the fish in a feed bag mood before winter gets here.
    Thanks, Bill

Yes, it was good day to explore a couple areas that are typically good fall fishing spots. Ron didn’t mention it, but he got a 12 inch crappie that had to be well over a lb. It was one of the thickest crappies I’ve seen in a long time.
Bill, sounds like the moonlight run on Zumbro was fun! I can hardly wait to get back out there and do a little more fishing.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike
