This last Saturday, a buddy of mine and I put in my small 12′ boat on one of the local puddles. It was just after 5.30, and I watched a fish rising to the surface as I got the gear in the boat and prepared to launch.
My buddy Jon got a strike from it when he threw a buzz bait but the fish missed. We tryed spinner baits – I had a strike, but didn’t react well – fish gone. Jon picked up a small LM. As he said at the time, it broke the “goose egg”.
Just after 6am, what wind we had stopped, the water turned to a sheet of glass. Then we say the rises – every where we looked, the fish were coming to the surface.
Jon fired a buzzbait to the edge of the slop – the water exploded. Jon very nicely brought in a 15.5-16″ LM on his 5ft ultra light and 2# line (didn’t get it measured – est. length).
Shortly after that, I connected with a chunky 13″ LM. We were off. We ended the morning at 9.00 w/ an even 20 LM. Most were small – most in the 9-11″ range, but we did boat the previouly mentioned fish, and 2 more 16’s by yours truely.
Many of the strikes we had were on the surface – it made for an entertaining time. We lost several fish – a couple coming un-buttoned at the boat, and lost track of the number of hits we had where the fish missed.
All the fish were released to fight another day – and some
are now film stars.
