Hit the lake with my Dad for a few hours last night. Fishing was pretty Okay . Crappies seemed to be a bit moody for some reason, but we still got a dozen+ decent ones. What we did find were some of those Super Sized Sunnies…..many over 8″ and one streaching all the way to 9″!!! Could have had quite the mess of fish if we had been keeping any.

All the fish were caught on 1/64oz jigs and plastics (paddle tails and twisters) in water less then 3ft.

Lots of people out there last night .

You didn’t tie into Musky last night did you? I always like to read about your epic battles….man versus fish….

Great Answer Jake!!!! Keep those fish stories and reports coming. It’s the fish stories that you will remember 20 years from now, not the 8 inch sunnie.

Mike/HOF and I fished the Zumbro for a few hours today. It was hit and miss the entire day. Pull up to a spot and catch a few fish, then it died off. Move to another location, same thing, few fish, then it got quiet. Oh we managed to catch several nice fish today, but had to work for them. Half of them were deep and the other half shallow. It is like they are indecisive and somewhat confused as where they should be right now. Crappies were 13′ and 14’s, Bluegills were 8 1/4 to 8 3/4. Mini Mites anywhere from only 2 feet below the bobber to 6 feet, depending on where you were. Some of the younger male crappies were blacker then the ace of spades. Very pretty. The gills are yet to show their bright and brilliant colors. If we could only get some consistent warm weather, things would be jumping.

Oh James, you would be surprised what Zumbro has in her. 12-14 inch crappies are not all that uncommon. Then of course there are those pesky bluegills that run up to 8 1/2 to 9 on a regular basis. With the improvement of the weather, the best is yet to come for some consistency. So far, it has been a few here and a few there with no real congregation. That is about to change.

Went out on Tuesday night and man are there a lot of boats out there on the weekdays. We caught a bunch of crappies and kept a few males, averaged about 12 1/2″, but the big bulls were hard to come by. Jake wasn’t kiddin’ about Ryan’s getting , we counted 7 boats as we drove by, not to mention there could’ve been 7 more in deep. That steep bank had about 8-9 boats there the entire time, until we got there during the prime time (sunset) and that is when the fish really turned on. The best fishin’ we probally had was 2 hours before we made the move to the our night spot, and that was down more by the dam.

We also saw the biggest musky that I have ever seen, probally 50″+, I’ve never caught one but have fished for them and I do have a 42″ northern under my belt(for credibility) and that musky dwarfed that fish. When does that season open??

The lake does get alot of pressure. But even so I still enjoy spending alot of time out there fishing. Very close and handy for fishin fixes.
    Thanks, Bill

Its really warming up fast with this warm weather then. I should be down there Tues during the day some I think so will be interesting to see whats happening as spawn may be over. When the water is around 65-68 ”throughout the water column” the fish will spawn and that may last only a few days or so. Thanks for the report.
    Thanks, Bill

Went out yesterday evening. Caught about 15 crappies, 2 sunnies, and 1 30″ northern that was lost by the boat.

The smaller crappies were up shallow relating to cover, but we did manage to get some bigger ones deeper.

Color played a big role in catching fish, so if you aren’t cathing anything don’t be afraid to switch colors. What was hot one day might not be the hot bait the next.

    Good Fishing
