With the walleye opener on lakes almost here I’m sure there are alot of anglers who don’t have a cabin rented for the weekend somewhere and are looking for some good lakes to fish for a day or two on opener weekend in the southern part of the state. Where would you suggest going for a day trip and where are you going for that day to fish?

Southern Minnesota has alot of lakes to choose from. On opener Madison lake over by Mankato has usually been a good lake along with Tetonka and Cannon can also be good at times. Getting closer to the Twin Cities you have lakes such as South Center and and other lakes in the Chisago lake area tend to be good. Lake Pepin along with the river both on the north and south end of pool 4 can put out some very nice eyes at that time of year too and is not as crowded with the opener finally here on the lakes.

Wherever you choose to spend the weekend please be carefull as there is alot of traffic on the roads, ramps and on the water. Have fun and please return the good spawner size fish to help keep the lake fishery in good condition so you may enjoy many more openers to come on your favorite lake.

Look forward to your report when you get back on how the 2005 Walleye Opener was for you.

    Thanks, Bill

    Hey Bill,

There certainly are lots of choices. I personally like Lake Pepin for opener. Lots of walleyes, not lots of competition.

    Good Fishing,

Got to agree with Mike. Pepin is hard to beat. Good luck

    Bill,

What should be considered spawner sized walleye?
