I didn’t buy a trout stamp yet this year. Can I go to fosters and use a spinner to catch trout and release them or not? Thanks, Troy

The official answer is that you need a trout stamp to keep trout from Foster’s. That is what is posted on the signs there. Bass hit spinners too, but that season is currently closed. Foster’s has special regs that allow year-round trout fishing. I seldom keep any trout, but still buy a trout stamp. I’ve paid $10 for lots of stuff less useful than a trout stamp.

I look at it this way: the small price for the stamp helps pay for stocking trout in the lake where lots of people can have fun catching trout there. Thats the only place I fish for trout as I’m not a trout stream fisherman. [can’t have every addiction ya know, walleyes panfish, smallmouth bass and lake trout are enough]. Its a fun place thats close for a fishing fix between weekends when I may only have a couple hours to fish on a week night. And a great place for people to have fun fishing on weekends if they don’t have a boat or don’t want to take the boat out fishing on a given day. I’m sure a fine from the DNR would cost alot more than the trout stamp.
    Thanks, Bill

While we’re on the topic of trout stamps can someone answer a question for me….I thought I would start collecting trout stamps so this year I began buying the pictoral stamp as well. I bought the stamp on the very first day I could. How long after you buy the actual stamp should you receive the pictoral? Did I buy the wrong stamp (I see there is a collectors stamp as well for $10)?

    Thanks, Chris

It usually takes a few weeks for the stamp to arrive in the mail. You can call the DNR if you think they need to mail it again. Does your license show the trout stamp costing $10 or $12? It needs to show $12 in order for the stamp to be mailed. I’ve never heard of the collector stamp you asked about.

It can sometimes take a couple months to get your stamps .

Last fall I didn’t recieve my pheasant stamp until the season was almost over.

Thanks guys. My license shows a $12 fee so I’ll just wait it out for a while longer. The DNR site shows the collectable trout stamp available only from the St. Paul DNR or through a mail in application. I wonder if it is the same stamp w/o having to pay for a license, which wouldn’t seem very practical, or a different stamp altogether. Here’s a link to the page that shows how to get the collectable stamp DNR License Page

Thanks for the facts. I’ll pick up a trout stamp this weekend. I have been asked this same question from many people while fishing at fosters and have not had the answer. Troy Pike
