Wormy Fish At Willow Creek Res.

I went to Willow Creek today and kept 12 blue gills from 7 to 8 inches. When I cleaned them I was disapointed as five fish had the blonde worms in them and all had the black fleck worms. I had to throw two of the five blonde worm fish fillets away. Now I am wondering since I got out the blonde worms of the three that were infected do I need not to eat them?

They all taste like fish once cooked.

The DNR says they parasites are nothing to be concerned about. I caught a few gills at the Finger Lakes this winter that had parasites. Both Willow Creek and Chester Woods gills tend to have them.

In otherwords are you saying: ”no extra charge for the extra meat.” ? Personally, I would dig them out and not eat them.
    Thanks, Bill

You ever seen any of those shows where people eat nasty stuff as a challenge? Live big bugs and gross stuff! I think those little parasites are no problem.

Does that mean you want the parasites from my fish? No problem Bud, they are yours.

Sure, they are kind of crunchie if prepared properly.

I think we’ve all probably eaten lots worse stuff without even knowing it. I read that the average person eats something like 8 spiders in their life! YUK!

Hey Bill I’m going to really make you sick now. I bet when you was younger you ate lots of panfish that was scaled (Not Filleted)????? You didn’t see those white worms, but they was still there. That pound ringed perch may have had 1/4 # of white worms, but you never seen them until you started filleting your catch.

Lucky for me that I don’t eat fish. I just put em back so I can catch them again. Never been a fish eater except tuna fish sandwiches. Thanks, Bill

That reminds me of a joke. A guy goes into a restaurant and asks the waitress “What’s the special”. She reply’s “cow tongue soup”. The guy says “yuck I wouldn’t eat anything that comes from a cows mouth. Give me some eggs”. Troy Pike

Bill, you better check your tuna cans. To make a long story short, whenI was in the service, in the late 60’s. I had a uncle who had retired an moved to the San Diego area. He showed me a can of tuna he picked up in a grocery store there. Lake Okebeji tuna, Spirit Lake, Iowa. He farmed very close to that area, and thought they had found a old family recipe for carp. He said it was left overs from lutefisk soup. I’ll take the little worms I find in sunnies.

Those tiny black spots that resemble pepper in sunnies, don’t really bother me too much as they fry up and disappear. However, anything larger kind of spoils my appetite. When I suspect there is a parasite concern, I will lift the gill plate and check the gills. If they are pink and clear, usually the fish is OK. However, if you see white nodules or cysts attached, then back they go. Only once did I fillet a sunny that had a rather huge cyst type sack in the flesh. Man that was pretty disgusting. Threw the whole fish away, sorry, couldn’t get that image out of my head. Yes during ones life time, we probably unknowingly consumed some undisered substances. However, if you can avoid it, most would. Hey Troy the cow tongue, eggs joke was a hoot.
