Rochester area ice report – 11/29

I went on a scouting trip today to see what has happened with all the cold and snow.
The Rochester impoundments have a skim of ice over most of them. I don’t think the snow made much difference to what little ice there was when it fell. If there was ice when the snow fell, it probably made the ice sink and did not sit on top of it causing a dangerous condtion of thin ice which is snow covered.
The MS. backwaters around Wabasha/Kellogg did not get much snow. There is anywhere from a skim to 1/2 inch of ice on most of the area. There are still boats using some of the launches and keeping a lane open.
Bottom line is that there is not any walkable ice today. I would expect that within a week, there should be at least a couple areas with walkable ice. I did notice a couple people using ice fishing gear while standing on docks in a harbor. As always, use an ice spud bar to check ice safety before walking on any ice!

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Are you trying to get my mind off of open water fishing and onto ice fishing thoughts? Keep it up and I’ll be anxious for ice too like you are. It won’t be long if the nights stay cold like they say they are. Thanks, Bill

Took another drive around the area yesterday afternoon. The ice situation has not changed much. I’m thinking the cold snap coming next week should make some good ice that we will be able to walk on.

    Good Fishing,

    Hey Ron,

Yep, the bug has bit me hard too! I suppose fishing off the docks in the harbors is an option? Crappies, sunfish and bass are very possible from the docks.

    Good Fishing,

With 45 degrees this weekend we will lose what we now have probably but with the cold snap coming it should start making ice next week. Thanks, Bill

Ah Bill, 45 degrees you predict. Say it ain’t so.
OK, OK, lets not get crazy here. I know. Maybe just maybe I could do the open water thing one more time.
Mike’s idea of the docks sounds good.
