Making ice

When I got off work this morning at 0600, I thought to myself, ah, she’s making first ice for sure now. Had to scrap the windshield off after 10 minutes of trying to get the frozen car door open. Fingers tips actually started to sting. All I could think was, boy it is down right cold and could just imagine the first ice getting a nice start. Now if it just continues to stay this cold especially during the nights, won’t be long and we will be walking on hard water. I knew for this time of the year, the snow was inevitable, however, I wish it had just held off a bit longer. For first ice, one likes to see that cyrstal clear, rock hard coat the top 4 or 5 inches. Mike and I have both said that it seems like the best ice fishing is the years when we have had little or no snow cover. Not sure what effect the wet and heavy snow will have on the formation of new and first ice, other then maybe to delay it a bit longer. Regardless, ice fishing is knocking on our door.

With the day temps around 35 degrees which means the night temps are in the 20s or even lower some nights there will be ice forming for sure. It won’t be long and the ice fishing season will be upon us. I hate the idea of putting the boats away but there will be other toys to play with on the ice.

Put the boat away, that’s an unusual idea. My boat never gets put away anymore except for that hard January freeze. My boat has been in the water every month this year SO far. I hate to jinx myself but I plan on making it every month this year.

The problem I have is I don’t have a garage so if any snow or ice gets in it, it doesn’t go away until spring warm weather so it can melt as it sits outside in the driveway. I do have my jon boat in front of the bigger boat with a cover on it just for emergencies like if I can’t stand being off the river any longer. :waytogo So I’m forced to ice fish to stay sane until spring.

    Thanks, Bill

Look at it this way Mike: I have my priorities straight as I chose 2 boats over a garage. And I can’t catch fish just sitting in a garage. And I’d rather be addicted to fishing than garage sitting. And fishing is so much more fun!!! And…And…And…

So acturally I won the battle as I am having FUN anyway!!!

    Thanks, Bill

Bill…sounds like you should be running for office in Gumption County. My father in law sits in his garage anytime he can. You could eat off the floor and his lawn looks like astro turf…but it real.
The down side to this is…when I ask him to go fishiing…it’s the same story…not today…fertalizing or weed and feeding or airiating or mowing the lawn.

Not that I hold it against him…it’s whatever makes you happy and where your prorities are at…he love the turf…I like you love the surf!

Love to surf this site AND fish too. Like having my fish, I mean cake and eat it too my friend. Is it time for us to do another small BB/BS Arm day? Oh yah, we gotta ice fish first then the warmer open water season will come.

Don, you wanna do some small ones in 2005? And I mean more than one? I’m buying a Wisc license again so gotta use it and do some. Am buying an Iowa one too as gotta troll some cranks on Spirit Lake too. Ryan, you will have to let me know when this bite heats up. [just don’t let it be in the first two weeks of June as have to fish the Mississipi River and Lake Winnebago then] Thanks.

    Thanks, Bill
