I would like to welcome Ron Weltzin, better known as RHW, to the IDA Field Staff position. He will also be a moderator on the Rochester Area Lakes Forum along with Mike/HOF and myself. Ron has been fishing panfish for 45 years and will be a great asset to the site and forum. I look forward to learning from his wisdom. Welcome Bud.
    Thanks, Bill

Gentlemen, thank you for the warm welcome. I must admit, I am very flattered to be included and asked to participate by those who I respect as high caliber fishing people.
Bill, if I were to offer any words of wisdom, I would say, as anything else in life, in order to be succesful, one has to be willing to learn, adopt and keep an open mind.
This is a fantastic site and there is so much to offer. My tackle box is full of tid bits that were picked up in here. Not only is there a wealth of knowledge to be had here, but it is also a fun place with lots of good people. Aside from the educational value, there has always been some funny and good natured bantering. To quote Bill, “a great big fishing family”. Thanks again and I will do my best to particate in a productive manner. Ron

OK, we can cancel the missing persons report, Doug finally surfaced. You have got to invite me for one of your late afternoon, early evening bites at Chesterwoods. Comeon ice, comeon, comeon.

Congrats Ron, hope to see you on the ice this winter. Maybe you can give me some advice. After 45 years you must have the techniques nailed!

Well look here, another stranger reappears. Chris where have you been? It was mentioned in another post about having the Rochester IDA guys get together for an outing this winter. It would be neat to see Chris, Doug, UG, Jake and meet some of the others. What do you guys
    think?

Sounds good to me. I’m always eager to be part of such a great learning opportunity and to meet some of the nice people of this community. I asked Mike about it today and he said that he thought there would be one where the toothy creatures lurk around here. I’ll see if I can’t get Tmusky to show up too. I doubt it will be very hard seeing how the only topic that comes up in conversation these days is about ice fishing.

Rock, kids contest? Let’t take it a step further and make it a whole family event. Wives, girlfriends, kids, grandkids, significant others, parents, grandparents. An outdoor winter celebration that just happens to include some ice fishing. There are all kinds of celebrations that us hardy Minnesotans enjoy, such as Octoberfest. Maybe we can start a new tradition with a crazy winter picnic.

I mean just think about it. Couple of bon fires , hot cider, coffee, hot dogs, sloppy Joe’s, chips, etc.. Could have a kids snow angels contest. Play some poka music, dance, laugh and just have some family fun. Right smack dab in the middle of winters worst. Could call ourselves the “Defiant”. My wife who is not an outdoors person said, if you bundle me up, I would attend.

OK Ron, you’re starting to scare me!
Sounds like a lot of fun! Polka on ice – what a concept!!! Who else has some ideas? Where, when, and how?

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

OK Mike, I got a little too zealous there, didn’t I? I have to remember, not all appreciate or enjoy ice fishing as much as I do and my wanting to share it. Besides, they already have such a celebration in Wabasha, Grumpy Old Men days, I think it is called.
Still it would be fun to have an IDA event, like Rock suggested, include the kids.

No, I didn’t mean to rain on your parade. I’m fine with other activities and having a big day on the ice! Just wondering what other ideas or suggestions there are? Anyone care to volunteer to be the coordinator for this event?

    Good Fishing,
    Mike

Ron: We need to brainstorm this. At the IDA gathering this summer I took some abuse for the sticker on my van from that “other” fishing website based in SE WI. But I was telling Mike and Bill about the great kids contest they do in June. My son has had a blast at it. The Lion’s kids outing in Feb that Mike donates bait for is always fun too. I’m sure with a enough heads together we can make this happen.

If this is going to be a Rochester Areas Lakes Forum Get Together [and anyone who wants to belong so to speak can come-everyone is welcome] then maybe its best to have it at Foster Arends Lake as its a lake that the Forum covers and is centralized for everyone who lives close to Rchester. I would suggest a Sunday afternoon as alot of people have plans on Saturdays and as far as a date we first must make sure we have thicker ice for safety reasons so picking the date would have to wait some til we have more ice info. I would suggest a little kids and bigger kids 1st place prize. Doesn’t have to be much but something for those places. I think the fun of fishing and getting together is more important over spending alot of money to have it. More fun to do it then and the importance of the gathering and friendships made isn’t taken away from. IDA already has a GTG in Prarrie du Chein so this would be a Rochester Area Lakes Forum GTG. In fact maybe its best to have three places for kids as turning the kids on to fishing is important and keeps our future of fishing going. What do you guys think? Thanks, Bill
