It was a crappie day!

Ron and I made a trip to the backwaters again today. Things have taken a big change in some respects. We caught a bunch of fish again today, but the bluegills were almost absent. I think we only got 4 gills today and the rest were crappies. We got some very nice ones up to 14 inches. I kept a meal and noticed when cleaning them, that every one was a male. I wonder if that means that the females have not come into the shallows yet? Maybe the best is yet to come?

Even though the temp was a bit chilly, the sun made it very bearable and it was a fun day to be fishing!

There is still lots of time to get out and enjoy some great fishing for panfish.

    Good Fishing,

    Mike

Still haven’t figured it out how you get to fish for a living [you sneak off to fish all the time] and I have to work for a living. Am going to rig alittle more on the Jon boat tomorrow then take it out and get some time on the motor so I can fish. Thanks for the report. Thanks for making me eat my heart out. Thanks for making me jealous. Thanks for making me crave to go fishing. Gee I need a fishin fix bad. Thanks, Bill

Hey Mike, I am not complaining, but where did those 9 inch Bluegills go. Yes, the crappies more then made up for the lack of gill action. Got to confess, I couldn’t detect males from females. Then again, Mike is always complete, but never once did I see him raise the tail to take a peek to see what sex they were. The guy is good. Today, we found they had dropped a bite lower. Instead of way up high, today, they were down to 3 to 4 feet. I made mention to Mike that it only took us 3 hours to figure that out. Once we did zero in, it was a blast. So again, one has to be willing to experiment and not just sit there thinking oh well, an off day. Change colors and depths. Work it.

13 degrees this morning! Bill, you better not wait much longer to get that new boat in use or we’ll have to push it across the ice.
Hey Ronald, no I didn’t look under their nickers!

    Good Fishing,

Hey Mike, Got the boat out on Lake Zumbro Friday and put the first two hours of break in on the motor. Pretty much finished rigging it today. Have a few small things yet I want to do but shes ready to catch fish. Jessie is sick and she was suppose to watch my three grandaughters tonight and Sunday so I said I would so will have to wait to get back on the water with it. Am hoping, maybe dreaming, that the nice weather will stay through out the end of the month. Sure would be nice. Thanks, Bill

Hey Bill, when can I take a ride in this neat rig? Besides the ride, we could fit in some panfishing.

Was hoping to fish all weekend but my youngest daughter got into a jam so I helped her out by taking my 3 grandaughters Sat. late afternoon and Sunday as she had to work the midnight shift and no babysitter as her hubby was out of town and the person who was going to watch them was sick. But I did get alot more rigging done on it. This coming up weekend my oldest son and family will be here from Wisconsin so I’m hoping Thanksgiving weekend will be warm still. Then after that let the ice come. Thanks, Bill

We are fishing from shore. Ron and I made another run over today and did very well on the crappies again. Caught several up to 14 inches. All came on small plastics(rubbers) or minnows on a plain hook. The fish were about 2-3 ft. suspended over deep water.

    Good Fishing,

Today, Mike and I caught fewer fish then last time, however, the ones we caught were huge. Yes, by all means, if you are planning on crappie fishing before it ices up, take minnows. Oh sure, plastics/rubber worked great, but when they slowed down, we switced to minnows and bang, we were into them again. It has been awhile since I have nailed that many big ones in a single outing. Normally I only keep 8 gills and or crappies for a dinner. This time, got by with just five and probably could have made it with only four. Dark red mini mites. My old standby the flicktail wasn’t so hot today.

The next time you guys go down you should let me know. I’d love to learn how to catch a crappie. You might have to lend me some of your ittybitty rubbers though…….and maybe a rod too……mine is probably too long and stiff

Will somebody ALSO teach Jake how to catch toothy critters on Lake Zumbro too? Oh, Hi Jake. Just looking out for your fishing interest. ,
    Thanks, Bill

PS. Maybe we could talk Chris [Northern Pike Geru] Lowe into taking Jake fishing for Northerns.

Hey Brian [Sgt. Rock], I had a choice money wise: garage or boats and fishing tackle. Guess which choice won? My fishing addiction took over and I just had to have fishin toys. Unfortunately you can only do so much on one income [divorced and finished raising my kids myself and even though they are now all grown up and on their own the income is still only one. Nate and Jessie are trying to get me hooked up with a gal who loves to fish but I guess I’m too scared to jump into a relationship so until I overcome my fears so to speak I will have to settle for just my toys and me. But thats not so bad either. Thanks, Bill

Yes Bill those were some dandies. Forgot to pull Mike’s 15 incher out of the pail and pose with him. Got mine on dark red mini mites with a black head.
You know what? To be honest, not really sure what Mike was using? I think either a flicktail or the same thing I was using. Mike, fess up, what did you catch the big ones on?

You guys know me, I’m changing stuff until I find something that works. The last time, I caught fish on mini-mites and also crappie minnows on a plain hook.

    Good Fishing,
    Mike
